Letters, 7/18: Where is the outrage?

Saturday, Jul 19, 2008 - 12:47:27 am CDT
As I observe patiently, many times impatiently, what is happening with our country, I find it increasingly difficult to maintain my veteran bearing.

It pains me to see the state of our nation. Everyone wants their money, now, with the increased cost of living, job loss, health and human services, education and the biggie, the cost of food, fuel and energy.

Buckle up, Nebraska. We are in for a long, rough winter. Would it not be nice if we could bottle up this heat for the cold winter months?

Instead of just focusing on biofuels, how about more wind turbines and solar panels?

What are Nebraska’s short-term, medium- and long-term plans to deal with this energy crisis? Many will be even more at risk this winter with the high cost of heating homes and businesses.

Where are the leaders, Nebraska? Oh yes, some of us are here but cannot get the attention of our media or elected officials.

Have you not heard the latest? All hands on deck: This will require every Sally and Sam for us to get our nation, our states and our communities on the proper road to recovery.

If you are not feeling the pain and suffering, just stay tuned. This is affecting us all.

As I have often stated, we will all swim together or drown together. You decide, Nebraska and America!

Iraq trip frivolous

It’s unfortunate that Sen. Barack Obama has let himself get bullied into going to Iraq by Sen. John McCain. Now it involves a Nebraska senator going along for the ride!

I fail to see the benefit of these civilian politicians going into a war zone. These trips are just photo ops for their campaigns.

Iraq is a dangerous place to be; why make it more dangerous for the soldiers assigned to protect them? I would hate to see a soldier hurt or worse yet killed because a politician thinks it’s important to visit Iraq and have his picture taken.

Furthermore, these high-profile politicians don’t fly coach. These trips are a waste of the taxpayers’ money and a colossal waste of fuel. They should stay in Washington and do the job they are paid to do.

Politicians should just continue to take their “fact-finding” trips to places that don’t require placing our soldiers in more danger than they already are!

Thanks for help after fire

Having known people who have lived at Thomasbrook Apartments, some for more than 25 years, and living here for more than two years myself, I can honestly say this is a wonderful place to live. For me, it’s a family atmosphere.

After the fire on the morning of July 12, I felt compelled to try and help my friends and neighbors any way I could. I contacted every news venue I could think of to talk about starting a donation site for clothing, furniture, food, monetary support, etc., to make this horrible experience just a little more bearable.

Most came through with flying colors. Thank you!
