Letters, 7/15: Mayor makes prudent calls

Harley Pfeiffer’s letter regarding Mayor Chris Beutler and the city budget seemed more aimed at scoring political points at the mayor’s expense than thoughtfully addressing the challenges our community faces.

He accuses the mayor of not being a proficient manager because of the existence of a $10 million fund. It was the mayor who discovered the special assessments fund had more money than needed and asked the law department as to its legal uses.

Pfeiffer lays the budget problem at the mayor’s feet, suggesting that it is his fault that services have to be cut. The truth is that past city governments have not been paying their bills. It is the mayor whose prudent financial leadership has resulted in millions of dollars of savings through city department reorganizations.

The writer says the condition of the parks is the mayor’s fault without acknowledging that the minimum mow policies started prior to Beutler taking office.

Finally, Pfeiffer asks us to make the same mistake that got us into this budget mess in the first place. He advocates that we use the one-time money of the special assessments fund and the home ownership stimulus plan for ongoing expenses. As the mayor repeatedly has pointed out, that just deepens the deficit problem and jeopardizes the very services Pfeiffer wants to preserve.

Instead, the mayor has prudently chosen to invest those funds in economic development and job creation, a top concern for myself and the community.

Confession of a Dew drinker

In regard to comments made in last week’s City Council meeting:

Dear Councilman Camp:

I am not unemployed, but I do ride the bus every day. Most everyone I see on board appears to be either going to or coming from work or school.

I am afraid that I was the lowlife spotted drinking Mountain Dew at the bus stop. I’m sorry.

Private air travel defended

I am writing in regard to the opinion “Jets come with high cost." In reading the column, I became a little angry at the implication that the travel troubles and so-called strain on the air transport system are a result of private air travel.

As a pilot of private jets, I can assure you that we pay our fair share of taxes and airport handling charges as well as landing fees. The fact that a Boeing 757 pays $2,015 in taxes while the Gulfstream pays only $236 should not surprise you because the Boeing is many times the size of a Gulfstream and burns more than 10 times the fuel. Taxes are based on a number of things, and fuel burn is one of the big ones, as well as gross weight of the aircraft and type of flight, the number of passengers, etc.

The use of remote airports is a primary way to reduce the so-called strain on the “overcrowded” airports. These airports are often in large cities that have multiple airports, such as Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix and so on. They provide jobs for thousands of people all over the country as well as the world.

Duncan Aviation has been my employer for more than 24 years, and we do all that we can to provide safe, secure and efficient travel to all who use us. I cannot speak to other operators, but I can assure you that we screen our charter customers.

" One problem, Mr. Gray, is that charter flights and other forms of private air travel are not efficient when compared to the larger commercial jets. Yes, a 747 burns more than 10 times the fuel of a smaller jet, but I'd be willing to bet that it carries way, WAY over 10 times the passengers. The amount of fuel consumed per passenger on a commercial jet is much lower than on a private jet. I have no qualms about calling it safe and secure, but it is most certainly not efficient. "

Jerrod wrote on July 15, 2008 9:31 am:
" I believe you maybe the only living soul who think Chris has done good things. If you can't see how he has wasted millions then you are not paying attention. And a politician will tell you anything to make you think he is right. What about 2015? He has done nothing but get us nowhere. "

ALB wrote on July 15, 2008 9:35 am:
" Ron, I read the transcripts. No where did it say smokers and Dew drinkers were low-lifes. What's that on your shoulder? Oh...a huge chip. "

Steve wrote on July 15, 2008 9:49 am:
" Jerrod is not the only one who thinks Chris has done good things. I would certainly be number 2. And what about 2015? You can join them...it's not an exclusively club. Anyone with Lincoln's best interest in mind can join Vision2015. Go to their website and get FACTS! Be a part of them and improve Lincoln. Instead of putting them down at every step join them and do something good for the community. DO IT!! "

So Steve.... wrote on July 15, 2008 11:10 am:
" What has vision 2015 done so great? please explain.... I want to improve Lincoln and that is why I don't approve of 2015. Chris has invested millions on worthless amateur filled projects and even nothing has come of that! "

Huh wrote on July 15, 2008 11:20 am:
" Joining the 2015 Club is like someone going shopping and filling their
credit cards to the max, and then hoping the credit card companies won't
notice or somebody else will pay them off!!! Ya see, I've spent 50 years
around city planners and private industry and the rich stepped up for the
most part to build and grow their city. They all work together to build
and progress for the whole, not for certain little groups of the rich to
prosper like here in Lincoln. They welcome competition and grow for
anyone that wants to bring in business. Not that way in Lincoln, yeah,
I've watched it afar off for many many years, still in their little bally-
wig while the city I lived in has grown to annex many many little towns
and just keeps growing! So whats the point of joining the 2015 me, me, me
and you taxpayers pay club??!! "

Oh please Steve wrote on July 15, 2008 1:42 pm:
" 2015 is basically a Paper Tiger. Im sorry that people think they will make the arena a success but that is why those people have no idea how a business works and never will. "

Mark Jansky wrote on July 15, 2008 2:33 pm:
" Now I'm confused. Some say the 2015Vision group is nothing but rich trying to get richer. Some say they're a "paper tiger" and know nothing about business (even though the list shows there are very successful business people as members). And another "former city" (we'll neer know) commenter knows more than the past 6 mayors combined.

Sorry to upset you, but I have to agree with Jerrod and his viewpoint. It has to be the most accurate, comparatively-speaking anyway. Mayor Beutler has done more for the benefit of Lincoln than all of you combined. And he hasn't even been a mayor for a year. "

natefrog wrote on July 15, 2008 3:16 pm:
" Nice sarcasm, Ron Feyerherm. Read between the lines, ALB. Camp was implying that if those unemployed people who ride the bus would stop smoking or drinking pop, they could afford an increased fare. "

Again Mark... wrote on July 15, 2008 3:19 pm:
" please list what the Mayor has done? Please do! Besides finding "hidden" funds. Really I am interested. I can't wait to see the property tax hike when he leaves office. Actually I will be long gone from this state by then so I could care less. "

One answer wrote on July 15, 2008 5:07 pm:
" I don't believe Mayor Beutler has performed a ribbon cutting yet during his term. Comparing that to Mayor Seng I'd say that's quite a positive.

As far as accomplishments I'm willing to give him a chance. He's barely been at it for 6 months. I'm not among the "gotta have it now" crowd, so I'll have a little patience. What have you accomplished? "

Get on board or out of the way wrote on July 15, 2008 9:37 pm:
" I am not sure the hostility towards Mayor Beutler. He has not even been in office for a year. It is irresponsible to state he has wasted millions of dollars. Please point out where exactly this has occurred. Your hostility should be directed towards the City Council and former Mayor Johanns. His republican tax cuts as mayor have done severe damage to Lincoln's people and prosperity. Now there are people that want to elect him to a higher office? Mayor Beutler has made signficant impact on the lives of people from his days in the senate, as a grant writer for the Lincoln Parks Department, and as he tries to correct the years of neglect to the city in his current position. With respect to 2015, why are people so afraid of this group. They are the ones that are making things happen. Thanks to Antelope Valley and the new park Union Plaza, a huge investment is being made into the city's core including the proposed multi-million dollar campus being built by Asurity. Be warned this is just the first of many major projects in the works for rebuilding downtown Lincoln. I cannot wait for the day when the nay sayers go away because they failed to hop on to the train that is progress. "

To One answer.... wrote on July 16, 2008 9:59 am:
" I have helped build 2 halfway and low income houses. Worked 97 hours of charity work through different charities. Voiced my opinion at town meetings. And have watched Chris blow our money on an arena that should never happen. And what have you done? Chris=Seng. It blows my mind how many people voted for this guy. Are your property taxes any lower like he promised? Wait til he leaves office they will be a good 8% higher. "

MarkyMark wrote on July 16, 2008 10:52 am:
" Why is it the same people that blame Slick Willie 8 years later for everything are the same people that blast Beutler who is just getting started. Can you say Partisan? "

Do you people even research wrote on July 16, 2008 2:43 pm:
" who you vote for? Ole Chris' people are the same people who were under Seng. And you wonder why there is no change. I don't expect immediate change but the things he wants to do are absolutely rediculous. Can we ever fix our roads or should we build a pointless money pit of an arena? You tell me. "
