Letters, 7/18: Where is the outrage?

As I observe patiently, many times impatiently, what is happening with our country, I find it increasingly difficult to maintain my veteran bearing.

It pains me to see the state of our nation. Everyone wants their money, now, with the increased cost of living, job loss, health and human services, education and the biggie, the cost of food, fuel and energy.

Buckle up, Nebraska. We are in for a long, rough winter. Would it not be nice if we could bottle up this heat for the cold winter months?

Instead of just focusing on biofuels, how about more wind turbines and solar panels?

What are Nebraska’s short-term, medium- and long-term plans to deal with this energy crisis? Many will be even more at risk this winter with the high cost of heating homes and businesses.

Where are the leaders, Nebraska? Oh yes, some of us are here but cannot get the attention of our media or elected officials.

Have you not heard the latest? All hands on deck: This will require every Sally and Sam for us to get our nation, our states and our communities on the proper road to recovery.

If you are not feeling the pain and suffering, just stay tuned. This is affecting us all.

As I have often stated, we will all swim together or drown together. You decide, Nebraska and America!

Ira Jinkins, Lincoln

Iraq trip frivolous

It’s unfortunate that Sen. Barack Obama has let himself get bullied into going to Iraq by Sen. John McCain. Now it involves a Nebraska senator going along for the ride!

I fail to see the benefit of these civilian politicians going into a war zone. These trips are just photo ops for their campaigns.

Iraq is a dangerous place to be; why make it more dangerous for the soldiers assigned to protect them? I would hate to see a soldier hurt or worse yet killed because a politician thinks it’s important to visit Iraq and have his picture taken.

Furthermore, these high-profile politicians don’t fly coach. These trips are a waste of the taxpayers’ money and a colossal waste of fuel. They should stay in Washington and do the job they are paid to do.

Politicians should just continue to take their “fact-finding” trips to places that don’t require placing our soldiers in more danger than they already are!

Thanks for help after fire

Having known people who have lived at Thomasbrook Apartments, some for more than 25 years, and living here for more than two years myself, I can honestly say this is a wonderful place to live. For me, it’s a family atmosphere.

After the fire on the morning of July 12, I felt compelled to try and help my friends and neighbors any way I could. I contacted every news venue I could think of to talk about starting a donation site for clothing, furniture, food, monetary support, etc., to make this horrible experience just a little more bearable.

Most came through with flying colors. Thank you!

" I wish politicians had done more fact finding before they got us into this mess in the first place. I'm glad that a senator who has actually been in harms way is going over for a look. Lord knows he will have better ideas than some guy who hid out in the states during his chance for service. I support the trip and I support Senator Hagel for going. Lets hope these guys come up with some ideas to help us get this mess fixed so we can focus on the messes here at home. "

" Sorry Don, but I happen to think it is important for anyone who runs for the office of President of the United States to see exactly what it is that the current administration has gotten us into and determine with some degree of certainty how things are going and whether we should withdraw our troops immediately or gradually...if they can be withdrawn at all. Not that many months ago John McCain and Lindsay Graham made a trip to the region but I don't seem to recall reading a letter to the editor from you complaining about that. By the way...having been a soldier who served in a combat zone, I can tell you that we enjoyed having high profile visitors and the security we had to provide for them wasn't that big a deal to us. It helped the morale and reminded us that there were folks back home thinking about us. "

" Come on, Don. Senators, Congressmen, and Administration officials go over to Iraq and Afghanistan all the time. Does that bother you too, or is it just that it's Obama? McCain has been over there something like eight times. I personally believe that they all should be going over there-- to see firsthand what the military occupation of Iraq, that they collectively allow to continue, looks like. "

" Ira, you want outrage? Here it is. I am outraged that I wasted my time reading your letter. What is your point? "

" How often do people who are all but leading candidates for their parties fly to war zones duiring the campaign? I realize that the senators have their rights to do so but it just seems like it is completely policially motivated at this point.

Really, if I was looking at race as a reason to vote for a specific politican to make me feel good about some perceived past transgressions about how their forefathers were treated, I'd be writing in Colin Powell. "

" noticed how many trips McCain has made to iraq. Hey guess what folks, when you go into a imminent danger or combat zone your pay becomes tax free. When I was there the politicians seemed to come in around the end of the month and leave right after the first of the month. Think about it. How many politicians are going to get their next two months pay tax exempt? Good to see Obama going in though. I want to know how much taxpayer money sen. mccain has spent already on his free trips. "

" I feel much better about one of the two candidates flying to a war zone prior to an election than a sitting president flying to Grand Island to stump for a candidate for Congress of his party. At the very least, the former exposes the potential president to the troops on the ground, allowing him or her to better lead the country if he or she is elected. The latter serves only to advance partisanship. "

" Obama might as well get started fixing things overseas. I think Mr. Sutton is quite worried about the photo ops, because people are going to get quite enthusiastic seeing someone beside a Bush administration representative over there. "
