The projector will light up again Thursday with the continuing Movies on the Green series. This year’s run includes films of the 1960s.
All of the screenings are presented on the grass in front of Kimball Recital Hall, 12th and R streets. Screenings are free and open to the public and begin at 9 p.m. on Thursday nights.
Each Thursday, The (402) will give you a rundown of the week’s movie and a brief guide in how to act, dress and drink accordingly
Tonight’s movie: “The Taming of the Shrew” (1967)
Directed by: Franco Zeffirelli
Starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Vernon Dobtcheff, Michael Hordern, Alfred Lynch
Rotten Tomatoes score: 85 percent
In brief: Still the most popular adaptation of Shakespeare’s play — well, if you don’t count “10 Things I Hate About You” — this one starts with a problem. Lucentio wants to marry the beautiful Bianca, but her father won’t give up Bianca until he marries off her older sister, the shrew of the title, Katherine (Taylor). So Lucentio and Bianca’s other would-be suitors persuade a wild drunkard named Petruchio (Burton) to tame and win the heart of Kat. A feisty battle of the sexes ensues.
What you should wear: Head to the green tonight like you’re were heading to the Globe Theatre. In Elizabethan England, men and women dressed for style over comfort, with colorful, intricate attires that sometimes took hours to put on. So find your best bodices, braids and puffing.
What you should drink: At this time the water was dirty in England, so the people drank wine and ale. Though most wine was imported, the English did produce their own Apple Wine.
Here’s a recipe for said drink:
16 cups apples, cored and chopped
2 pounds raisins
4 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon yeast nutrients
11/2 teaspoon acid blend
1/2 teaspoon pectic enzyme
1 campden tablet
1 gallon water, hot
1 package wine yeast (for 1 to 5 gallons)
