John Jones enjoyed his first experience taking part in the Cornhusker State Games last summer.

“A lot,” the Lincoln Southeast sophomore said.

So much that Jones is really throwing himself into the State Games, which begin this weekend, by competing in three different sports.

The games begin

* About 11,700 athletes have signed up for the 2008 Cornhusker State Games.

* The games start this weekend at more than 70 venues and continue through July 27.

And while officials say several of the thousands of athletes in town will compete in three events, few have picked the combination Jones has: triathlon, bowling and disc golf.

“People think it’s kind of weird,” Jones said, “just because they’re so different from each other.”

For Jones, though, the events are part of his daily lifestyle. He’s on the Southeast cross country, swimming, bowling and track and field teams.

By Friday afternoon, he’d already worked out with cross country and swim teammates, and was headed out to play some disc golf. Jones just started playing disc golf this year, but won his division at a recent competition.

Saturday will be Jones’ busiest day, as he competes in disc golf and bowling. Originally, Jones thought he’d have a two-hour break between events, but a schedule change means he won’t have much time to catch his breath and change his shoes.

The triathlon competition is on July 26. And while Jones has never competed in a triathlon, he’s confident because he’s run several half-marathons.

Last year, Jones won his division in golf at Jim Ager Memorial Junior Golf Course. He enjoyed competing in the Games.

“I like how there are people from all over the state,” Jones said. “It’s not just the same people, like at road races in Lincoln.”

Jones has already begun to think about next year, when he says he’ll probably try golf again, along with bowling, triathlon and disc golf. Oh, and one other sport.

“I’d like to try dodgeball,” he said.
