HASTINGS — Jayson Garett, who walked away during a Lincoln Regional Center field trip in January, has been ordered to take medication for a mental disorder.

Adams County District Judge Terri Harder issued the order for Garett, 31, who in 2006 was found not responsible by reason of insanity in the 2004 stabbing death of a Hastings man.

On Jan. 17, he disappeared during a field trip with regional center staff to a bookstore at SouthPointe Pavilions and was found the next day near Hickman.

Authorities say Garett, who, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s office stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 280 pounds, has become violent since refusing to take medication for a bipolar disorder.

A doctor at the Lincoln psychiatric hospital wrote a letter saying that, among other things, Garett fought with another patient, broke a window, used a chair to hit a staff member and chased a nurse.

" The system works. No longer can doctors and nurses with delusions of grandeur force medicate people against their will. Bi-Polar is the worst form of illness as its victims ENJOY the rush they get from the manic end of the disorder and often times AVOID medication as much as possible. The younger the patient the more likely this is to be the case. It seems that the state should have brought their request to the mental health board sooner than they did, however. "

" Although I do agree with you about how the system works and how a patient may refuse his or her medication, I do have to disagree with you on the rest of your comment. I myself am a 'victim' of Bi-polar disorder...no, scratch that-I'm not a victim, I am an individual who has the disorder and has to deal with it every day. I don't AVOID my medications at all because I surely do not ENJOY the rush when I hit my manic peak. Don't put everyone with this disorder in the same stereotypical group because each person with the disease has different highs and lows. My manic phases make me deal with involuntary shaking, panic attacks, inability to sleep, racing thoughts...it's not a pleasant experience at all. Maybe you should do some research on the disorder before you group us all together like we're a blemish to your 'perfect' society. Oh, and just for the record, I'm only 21. "

" And this is a guy who had privileges for visiting a bookstore in south Lincoln? "

" I still cannot understand how this person, a murderer, had the privilege of an outing of any kind! I knew the person he stabbed and I know the family of the victim as well. He should be in prison, not going to book stores or anywhere else for that matter! It appears that he is a violent man regardless of where he is. God bless the Peed family and all they have endured since the death of Daryl. "
