Hastings judge orders medications for mental patient
HASTINGS — Jayson Garett, who walked away during a Lincoln Regional Center field trip in January, has been ordered to take medication for a mental disorder.
Adams County District Judge Terri Harder issued the order for Garett, 31, who in 2006 was found not responsible by reason of insanity in the 2004 stabbing death of a Hastings man.
On Jan. 17, he disappeared during a field trip with regional center staff to a bookstore at SouthPointe Pavilions and was found the next day near Hickman.
Authorities say Garett, who, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s office stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 280 pounds, has become violent since refusing to take medication for a bipolar disorder.
A doctor at the Lincoln psychiatric hospital wrote a letter saying that, among other things, Garett fought with another patient, broke a window, used a chair to hit a staff member and chased a nurse.
