Seminar examines media role in disasters
OMAHA — A conference in downtown Omaha is examining the role of the news media during disasters and other traumatic events such as the Von Maur shooting.
The featured speaker Friday is Bruce Shapiro of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. Shapiro trains members of the news media on how to deal with the psychological aspects associated with covering traumatic events.
Mall shooting survivor Fred Wilson is among the scheduled speakers.
On Dec. 5, 19-year-old Robert Hawkins opened fire in the Von Maur store at Westroads Mall in Omaha. Eight people were fatally shot and five wounded, including Wilson, before Hawkins killed himself.
Wilson plans to speak about how time and faith have aided his resiliency and ability to forgive.
