AURORA — Aurora’s Cooperative Elevator Company is celebrating 100 years of helping farmers get better prices for their crops.

In 1908, 25 individuals banded together and raised $9,800 to form the coop and build a 31,000-bushel grain elevator.

In its 100th year, the coop reported $23.5 million net income, and it had the capacity to store 38 million bushels of grain at 43 locations.

Coop president George Hohwieler says today Aurora is expanding into ethanol production by building a 226 million gallon plant as part of a new complex. The co-op is also building a grain handling facility and dry fertilizer complex.

Hohwieler says co-ops have to be willing to change quickly to deal with challenges and better serve members.
