A tanker truck filled with vegetable oil ended up on its side, gumming up afternoon traffic in the Havelock area Friday.

The driver wasn’t injured, but the accident around 3 p.m. blocked eastbound lanes of Cornhusker Highway at 56th Street.

A HazMat crew with Lincoln Fire & Rescue was headed to the scene in case officials needed help with the spill.

" The streets in Lincoln are flat. Traffic is slow. How in the heck did this guy manage to tip his truck over? I would hate to have to tell my boss about this one. Not to mention there was no ice. LOL "

" It's not flat right there. "

Well heres how it works... wrote on July 18, 2008 11:39 pm:
" If the liquid in his truck was sloshing in the right manner and he was not full...then his tanker could have rocked him over on his side depending on the speed he was driving and the angle he took in his turn. So when considering that that intersection is uphill and at an angle and taking physics into account...the answer is PRETTY OBVIOUS "

" as a tanker driver myself I also find this very hard to believe. There are different style of tanks and different products hauled by tanks safely everyday, unless you turn the corner to fast. My guess is this was a younger and or a newer driver that got into a hurry. "

" How about making a left turn traveling too fast? That would turn any vehicle over on a flat street. This is strictly driver error. "

" Food Grade liquid tankers are especially prone to rollover type accidents. Because of the need to keep the insides of them spotlessly clean most of them do NOT have internal baffles. Vegetable oil weighs close to 8 pounds a gallon and 6,ooo+ gallons of liquid has a lot of inertia. The driver may have had to make a sudden stop or turn because of something another driver did. Who knows? It doesn't take much to turnover. "
