Joseph Hall could hear the buzzers from the waiting room.

It made him more nervous.

“I didn’t know whether they would love me or hate me,” Hall said by phone about his recent “America’s Got Talent” experience.

“I had seen so many acts before get buzzed,” he added. “That buzzer is loud. It’s like being in the middle of the Civil War or something.”

There were no buzzers for this Elvis Presley tribute artist from Lincoln — only praise from judges David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan.

“You’ve got the looks and the moves,” Hasselhoff told him after his Chicago audition, which aired Tuesday night on the NBC summer reality show.

Osbourne was more generous with her words.

“I just want to keep staring at him,” she said of Hall, who performed Presley’s “Hound Dog” in a black leather outfit.

Hall, 23, did what many tribute artists were unable to do before him: advance to the next round in Las Vegas. He’s already filmed his Vegas experience but can’t reveal how he did.

His Tuesday night performance came at the end of the two-hour episode. It was preceded with a clip featuring the judges’ disdain for tribute artists. They buzzed performers impersonating Ozzy Osbourne (Sharon’s husband), Elton John, Rod Stewart and several other Elvises.

Hall, however, won them over, including the tough-to-please Morgan, who said he hates Elvis impersonators.

“They come out and they are fat and bald and impersonate him just before he died,” he told Hall. “I thought, if you sing how you look, we’re going to have a great act here. And you did.”

The best line came from Osbourne, who told the young entertainer she had shoes older than him.

“I would like to try you on,” she said, smiling.

The key to the performance was the studio audience, which went wild when he hit the stage.

“As soon as I heard the crowd, I knew I had this,” Hall said. “It built my confidence up. A crowd can make you or break you. I was very fortunate.”

His father and manager, Kyle Hall, said he could tell his son was feeling it when he watched Tuesday night.

“He was totally in control,” Kyle Hall said. “The way he handled it … he came out like the stage was his stage.”

As of late Wednesday morning, Hall had not yet seen the entire clip. He was on stage at Legends in Concert in Myrtle Beach, S.C., when it aired. He’ll be at Myrtle Beach until Aug. 2.

He said his bosses saw it.

“They want me in leather tonight,” he said.

His friends and family watched it as well. Their response was tremendous.

“I’ve been getting calls from family members I didn’t know I had,” Hall joked. “All my ex-girlfriends are calling me.”

" Whenever I see and hear a great Elvis impersonator, it brings back such grand memories I'm in seventh heaven! His rock music stirred my hormones and his gospel music stirred my soul - and still do, even though I'm now a senior citizen! It tickles me that my teenaged grandson is a big Elvis fan - plays his music, watches old interviews, and Elvis' movies. Elvis lives on! "

" Joe is a great performer. I seen him at the Silver Spoke one night - what an act. I think he changed outfits like four times or something. Poor guy was sweating so bad b/c the place was packed and not that cool. We had a great time. Good Luck Joe!!! Kick some bootie in LV "

" Hall was great, but had to watch almost four hours of this awful show to see him. Nothing good on Tuesday nights. Even "Beauty and the Geek" was reruns. "

" Nice to see a "Elvis" that isn't old, fat, and ugly. I saw Elvis when he was in shape in Las Vegas in 1973 at the Hilton International. Best concert I ever saw. "

" I hate Elvis impersonators too. But, I have to admit, Joseph had Elvis down to a Tee. Good luck. "

" I've seen Joe several times while eating out at the Golden Corral. I used to think he looked like Elvis, and sure enough, a couple years later he's on live T.V. heading his way to Vegas!! Congrats Joe and good luck, hope ya make us Lincolnites proud!! "

Little E wrote on June 25, 2008 5:41 pm:
" I've seen him in a few of his shows and he goes by "Little E" I believe. Damn good performer and at such a young age he has a promising career ahead of him with all the baby boomers enjoying Vegas and Branson. He may stay in one place, but I think he would do better traveling the circuits like he does. "

" I watched the show and I have to be honest...........I didn't care for him at all and anyone who is an Elvis fan would know he didn't have the moves down......didn't have the look and definitely did not have the voice. Sorry, there will never be another Elvis! "

" So very proud of Joe and how well he is doing. His family is the greatest, too, and so very supportive. He does Lincoln proud!!!! Jeff, thank you for the newspaper article. Please be sure to put August down on your calendar and remind every one to VOTE. Hopefully the newspaper will follow up on this and get the word out, too. We're not a very populated state; but we are loyal and support our natives! "

" Hi, I just loved watching Joe on America's Got Talent! Although, he could use some improvement, but everyone could use some improvement. He looked good and sounded good, so there ya go. It was a little different because not many guys (or girls, I dunno) do impersonations of the younger Elvis which was refreshing. Anyone know if he's dating anyone, LOL! "

" Our family are all music lovers. My uncle had a band most od his life and did a lot of Elvis and CCR. I have 2 girls, 1 is 33 and the youngest just turned 18. We met Joseph at Lake George. We had tickets we for the steam boat ride on the Mini Ha Ha and Joseph performed for most of an hour. It was raining out side but none of us knew as we where with a very talented young man. He also has a big heart. My youner girl has cerbral palsy and is in a wheelchair so she had to wait for the crowd to clear so she could use the elevator. Joseph came over and talked with her and her dad for about 20 minutes or so. They had his picture taken with her. He made her world that day. Less than a week later we rushed her from Binghamton, NY to Pittsburgh, Pa to have emergency surgery. Those pictures went with her (even to the OR) and she told her story of how wonderful a preformer he is and I told how he touched our hearts. We sent him pictures from her 18th birthday and he took time to reply. This little girl hasn't ever had an experience like this in her life and will never forget it. We hope to see him again someday. I know we'll see him in the lime light soon. To us he is the Ultiment Elvis. Joseph thank you for so much more than you could ever know. She's now trying so very hard to talk. She has her own special story to tell and of her giant crush. Wishing him all the best. "
