Police say a man fired a gunshot in a Lincoln restaurant early Friday as he attempted to rob the place.

A man wearing a dark hoodie pulled over his head and a bandanna covering his face came into Perkins at 48th and O streets at 3:04 a.m. and told the manager to open the cash register, Officer Katie Flood said.

The manager told the man she had to go to the office to get a key, Flood said. When she was in the office, she called police. The suspect realized what the manager was doing and forced her out of the office, Flood said.

The man fired one shot from a black semiautomatic handgun toward the dining area before leaving on foot, Flood said. No one was injured, and the suspect did not get any money. Some of the diners saw what was going on, and police received several calls from people during the incident.

Police believe someone may have been trying to rob another restaurant Thursday morning.

A manager at Pizza Hut, 2662 Cornhusker Highway, stepped outside around 9:30 a.m. to make a deposit, Flood said.

As she was walking toward her car, a man who had been standing by a trash can 15 feet from the door pulled a bandanna over his face and started running toward her, Flood said. The woman screamed and ran, and the man ran across the street, possibly getting into a white vehicle.

Police are investigating, and it was too soon to say whether the incidents were related, Flood said.

" Thank goodness nothing else happened. This situation could have turned bad real quick. This type of problem is starting to happen on a consistent basis at these late night establishments. "

" Why don't some of these late night establishments close at night? There is no need for these places such as Perkins to be open late at night. "

" I would even go further than Erik and say that we should live in constant fear. We should close all businesses regardless of the time of day. "

" I completely agree with Gene. In fact I am so scared of these robberies generally I will only eat what I can grow in my backyard. I will run to my garden, pick something to eat and then scurry back in to my home. "

" Yeah, definitely building a moat too...can't be too safe with all these criminals running around and while i'm at it, i'm also going to put bars on my windows and doors and get a guard dog...it's sad what this world is coming to! Unfortunately I work at a 24hr store, it's a scary thing but you just have to handle the situation properly. Anyway, i was actually in the area at the time this all went down...there were cops everywhere and they had their guns drawn on a white vehicle across the street from perkins-it was kind of exciting. " I don't think Erik has taken into consideration that no, not everyone works 9-5 and yes, there IS a need for those places to be open - it's called "revenue". "
