Maybe the folks at Lancaster Manor will miss their friend, Dennis Post. But I wonder if any of your editors thought about the feelings of the victim(s) of Dennis Post’s sex crime.

He paid for his crime, and that makes him square with the house again, but to devote an eighth of a page to making him look like such a sweetheart showed pretty poor judgment — and complete lack of caring for the feelings of his victim(s).

People who commit such crimes frequently are “sweet” people, because nasty and unfriendly people would not be able to manipulate people into liking and trusting them enough to allow them to reach their goal of sexually molesting someone.

You would have done the world a better service by running a story on the methods that such people use to gain the trust of their victims and their victims’ parents or guardians. One of the methods is to be a sweetheart whom everyone likes, so no one would believe the person capable of such a crime.

Since you knew of his crime, you never should have printed a story glorifying him.

Examples of waste

Mike Seacrest believes that mowing cutbacks by the Parks Department are a direct result of budget restraints.

Several examples lead us to believe that the Parks Department operates on an uncontrolled budget. These examples are:

(1) In 2005 the Parks Department remodeled a drainage ditch in Larsen Park for $326,000. The intent of the remodeling has never been realized but has created problems for us, the adjacent property owners.

(2) A basin was created by the above project, which was a muddy hole for all the years of 2006, 2007 and so far 2008. The Parks Department agreed to seed the muddy basin and did so at the start of winter of 2007. So far, only weeds have grown, but no grass.

(3) The Parks Department uses two and sometimes three mowers to mow Larsen Park. During one of the mowings, one of the mowers got stuck in the mud near the basin. Employees called on one of the other mowers to try to pull the stuck mower out of the mud, but even though the mower pulled from the front and the back, it was unable to free it. The mower that was called to assist could have finished the mowing but was sent away. I imagine that it would cost a great deal of money to send a machine back to the basin to complete the mowing.

I’m sure there are other examples of waste by the Parks Department; these are just a few.

Don’t insult trailer residents

In a June 20 JournalStar.com article about missing lawn flamingoes, one of the quotes reads, “My first place to check would be trailer parks.”

I’m sick and tired of people condemning people living in trailer parks. I have a mobile home here in Lincoln that I would be happy to put up against any of you people living in Lincoln in a better than average house. I have three bedrooms, two baths and a beautiful yard with a white picket fence.

I’m a senior citizen living on Social Security only. My home is paid for and my taxes are only $250 a year. Let’s see you beat that.

I would much rather spend my money on the grandkids than pay upkeep and taxes on a cookie-cutter house. A little respect here, please.

" I read that story and did not see it as "glorifying". I thought it was interesting to read that this person had come to realize the problems of his former behavior. I think it is news that someone turned their life around. And the way the story was written did not seem to glorify this person's crime in anyway. I do agree that a story on how offenders gain their victims confidence through grooming would be appropriate. But I do not see anything wrong with the story on Dennis Post. "

" A cookie cutter house? Isn't that what ALL trailer houses are? "

" Oh for pity's sake! Some people will complain about anything, won't they? I read LJS's story on the death of Dennis Post. I saw not one single thing in it 'glorifying' him. It reported that he had an outgoing personality, and that he and two buddies enjoyed watching wrestling and playing cards. Equal space was given to the fact that he spent over 7 years in prison for a sex-crime. LJS is not PERMITTED to use the names of sex-crime victims in it's articles. It's a privacy issue. Mr. Post was interviewed last year for an article on the state’s aging inmate population. This was just a little follow up to that, and no disrespect to anyone. "

" I totally agree with you, Donna! I am so sick of people judging others by what or where they live. I am tired of people thinking that only the ones on the South side of town are a 2 parent working family...or those that they are so much better because they live in a new housing development. I live in an older part of Lincoln and I am constantly being talked down to by people who live in new housing areas. I have a nice, older home...both my husband and I work...we get our kids to school by ourselves...we pay taxes just like everyone else...and yes, I have been known to have a "flock" in my yard a time or two...does that make me a lower class person? I applaud Donna for having a home with a picket fence and a beautiful yard...and she is not asking for help from anyone, just living within her means and does not deserve to be ridiculed because she lives in a mobile home. She probably has a nicer home than a lot of people who actually live "in houses". Thanks for speaking up, Donna! I stand on your side! "

Tim wrote on June 24, 2008 7:54 am:
" Yes 'Gee'. This is Lincoln Nebraska. All we do is complain. If someone actually attempts to do something about a problem, those who haven't done anything complain about the actions taken. Tradition is sacred, never to be questioned. Never change anything, because change is always bad.

No, I'm not attacking Gee, I'm honestly posting my view of Lincoln. "

" The Larsen Park basin has been mentioned before in these comment pages. If it is such a problem for the neighborhood, has anyone contacted the city council representative for this area in regards to the problem? Is it possible that the Parks' budget has been cut since 2005 that they have not been able to continue the work as it was intended? Perhaps they have only been able to provide a stop-gap measure.

Have you or your neighborhood association tried to work something out with the Parks' administration or the City? Remember that the City is ultimately responsible for the actions of any department within the city governemnt. "

" Tim - in your spot-on assessment of Lincolnites (or at least the ones who post here), you forgot two key traits: the darn liberals (and the liberal media) are always out to raise my taxes and I already pay WAY too much in taxes. "

" If anyone has an inferiority complex about where they live they should do something about it. I find it extremely hard to believe a person would "talk down" to somebody solely because of what their address is. Ridiculous. "

" Tim, I suspect the reason you see mostly negative things in the comment section, is because there isn't a lot of joy in many peoples lives these days. Everything costs more, yet no ones income is keeping up. Being poor sucks! "

" You admit to having a "flock" on your yard every once and a while. That is the difference between you and I. When I buy something I want to take care of it and live in a neighborhood where people don't keep there cars, boats, weight, and garbage on their lawn. That drives property value down and there for I would not want to live in a place like that. I take pride in things I own unlike some people. Don't you like to look at your house and think "wow, I busted butt to make this look like it does"? try it sometime. "

Daisy wrote on June 24, 2008 2:02 pm:

And yes, Eric, people do "talk down" to others based on their address. "

" If there is anyone I hate it is complainers! I am sick to death of people who come on here and complain! You people STOP complaining about everything! All complainers are is belly-aching and unproductive. If you don't have anything good to say do not say it! Stop complaining about things!! "

Nina wrote on June 24, 2008 2:59 pm:
" Oh yes, Eric, such discrimination based on where and how fancy a facility is your dwelling is a big factor in the way many perceive you. How do you think the saying, "living on the wrong side of the tracks" derived? In our small hometown and the neighboring small town, the description is apt. The north side of town is where the nicer homes are, (as a recent unsolicited ad asked me, "How would you like to live in Unadilla's finest section?", and made me chuckle). Same in Syracuse, to our east. The closer to the train tracks, the worse the neighborhood, according to appearances. To me, that in no way reflects upon the residents' worth as people, but believe me, there are those who judge others in that respect. "

To all you people who... wrote on June 24, 2008 5:24 pm:
" who say "oh south siders this and south siders that", are you not judging yourself? You people crack me up. I live in Havelock and all I hear is complaining, "oh my life doesn't have this" but they are the same people who sit in Bobs and drink and complain but do nothing to fix their situation. So I hope to move and get away from yards nobody cares about and people who complain about everthing. "

" When I made the comment on the Chief's blog, I was not talking down, making fun of, or "dissing" trailer park residents. The majority of pink flamingos that I have seen in my life, have been in trailer parks. If you enjoy living in trailer parks, good for you! It was just a joke. "
