Suspected shooter turns self in
By CORY MATTESON / Lincoln Journal Star
A fourth suspect in a June 8 shooting turned himself in to the Lincoln Police Department Monday morning.
John Le, 20, was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, Officer Katie Flood said.
Prosecutors Monday afternoon charged Le with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of using a weapon to commit a felony.
Lancaster County Judge Mary Doyle set Le’s percentage bond at $750,000.
Police believe Le fired the gun that injured Joseph Garza, 22, and Benjamin Velde, 20, at an apartment near 43rd Street and Cornhusker Highway early June 8, Flood said.
Garza was paralyzed from the neck down after being shot three times and stabbed once, according to the affidavit for Le’s arrest.
Velde was shot in his right shoulder, but left the scene.
Velde and Anthony C. Tran, 20, were arrested last week on suspicion of aiding and abetting a felony. On the day of the shooting, Robert Reynozo, 21, was arrested on suspicion of criminal conspiracy.
According to the affidavit, witnesses at the apartment described a large number of people coming to the apartment to fight Garza. Some people inside the apartment tried to flee through a back window as the front door was being kicked open. Gunfire soon followed.
Police believe the men also confronted Garza the day before the shooting, and that the arguments were related to narcotics, Flood said.
