An 85-year-old Lincoln man was victim in a sweepstakes scam over the telephone.

A person claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House called the man several weeks ago and told him he had won $250,000, said Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood.

The person told the man had to send cash by Money Gram to pay for the taxes before he could receive his prize, Flood said.

He sent money three times to New York and Los Angeles for a total loss of $4,223, Flood said.

" People will stop falling for this crap when we fix all of society's ills. The people that generally fall for this are elderly (like this guy), lonely, sick, or depressed, which makes them easy targets for con artists. "

" HE'S EIGHTY-FIVE. To even have a half a second where you would blame this poor VICTIM is really unbelieveable. Karma, wow. Karma. "

" Do I feel sorry for the guy? Without a doubt but what is society supposed to do? There has to be personal responsibility regardless of condition or perhaps he shouldn't be in charge of his own finances. A fool and his money are soon parted. "

" It seems to me that education is the key, and I feel that it is MY responsibility to educate my elderly parents on what is going on in this old world. I tell them that most of this is not real, but if you think it is, take down all the information you can and then tell the people that they will have to talk to "my son". If it is something Legit, they will probably talk, if not, they won't. Even if it was legit & they don't talk, my parents aren't actually OUT anything. I feel a little safety now can save a world of hurt later on! "

" Blame the victim??? What is this world coming to, 85 years old; he comes from a different time where people could trust each other and doors were never locked. Lets do something about the criminals and stop blaming the victim's..... "
