A 50-year-old spent the weekend in jail after allegedly throwing an ax at a driver after a near-miss collision.

Tango Crenshaw of Lincoln was turning at Northwest 48th Street and West Adams at about 4:45 p.m. Friday when he had a near miss collision with a 39-year-old man, Capt. Dave Beggs said.

The two exchanged gestures and profanities. When the 39-year-old parked in front of Crenshaw’s motor home and confronted him, Crenshaw produced an ax, he said.

The 39-year-old retreated to his car and started to make a u-turn to go southbound on Northwest 48th Street, having to pass Crenshaw again.

That’s when Crenshaw allegedly threw the ax at the car, striking the door. The ax went through an open window and the blunt end of the ax hit the driver in the ribs, Beggs said.

An officer drove up just after it happened. By that time, the officer said Crenshaw had a shovel out, claiming the other driver had tried to rum him over twice and that he was trying to defend himself. But, Beggs said, a witness refuted his story.

Police arrested Crenshaw on suspicion of assault, vandalism and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

“If somebody commits a traffic infraction or you view them as cutting you off, just count to 10. Forget about it and realize you’ll probably do it to somebody else down the road,” Beggs advised drivers. “It’s not worth the trouble.”

He said not to exchange gestures or words or follow people. It just ends up leading to things like this, he said.

The victim on this one could be dead, Beggs said.
