An 85-year-old Lincoln man has died, a week after being injured in a crash at North 84th Street and Leighton Avenue.

Alvin Niemeyer died Saturday, according to a report by the Nebraska Department of Roads. His memorial service was Thursday.

The accident report says at about 5:15 p.m. May 17, Niemeyer was driving a 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera west along Leighton Avenue when he collided with Harry Goeblein’s Ford Tempo, heading north on North 84th Street.

Goeblein, 86, told police he tried to stop when the car pulled into the intersection, but couldn’t. His passenger was injured in the crash.

" This is the most recent of what is certainly to be a number of fatal accidents at that intersection. Lights are needed so badly. Drivers take desperate risks to cross the 84th Street traffic as there is little opportunity to cross easily. Please install lights! "

" I am sorry to hear of this accident and resulting death.
As a resident of the area and a frequent user of the road, I will comment that this is one dangerous intersection at peak traffic hours as there is no stoplight and one must deal with a 4-lane divided street with multiple cars traveling in both directions at speeds of 45-55 mph.
I like a fast 84th Street as much as anyone, but I hope that those who can affect change will take a closer look here to maximize the safety of the drivers. "

" This is a tragedy; however, there are lights at 84th and Holdrege and at 84th and Adams, avoid the risk of an accident and detour to one of those streets. Everyone will be safe and 84th street trafic will remain fast! "

dlb wrote on May 29, 2008 7:12 pm:
" instead of adding MORE LIGHTS, why not stop putting cuts in the median at these no name streets that access to should be controlled better anyway. If you wanna go south on 84th then drive to holdredge and cross with the EXISTING light. If you wanna go north on 84th do the same with adams. Makes more sense than another light. The same could be said of Vine, the entrance to Statefarm etc, etc. None of these lights needs to exist if the left turn and median cuts were eliminated. "

" We could make 84th have a 25 MPH limit, we could eliminate left turns onto 84th, and we could put a light at 84th. As long as the DMV hands out drivers licenses like candy on Halloween we will have these types of crashes. "

" please install lights at this intersection or change the speed limit with two restaurants there and more businesses coming it is needed "

" There is definitely a need for a stop light at 84th and leighton!
I can see how an accident could happen. There are eaterys on the east side of the street and trying to get back acrossed 84th st on Leighton is next to impossible! "

" With all the traffic along 84th, and the future walmart going in, there's bound to be more. Hopefully someway this can stop. "

" I'm sorry for this terrible crash, but we can't put a stoplight at every location where an elderly driver gets into an accident. My grandma wouldn't give us her keys when she turned 80 and crashed into a tree, luckily noone was hurt & she stopped driving. Please inform your elders on the safety of driving! "

" This is very sad. When we built our home in this area 18 months ago, we were assured that there would be a traffic signal light installed within the year.......is this still the plan? It is obviously needed! "

Doug Griffiths wrote on May 30, 2008 1:47 am:
" This intersection at 84th and Leighton is becoming more hazardous and its time for the city to install a light in all directions so those people who are trying to cross 84th to KFC and the Resturants or turning North or South from either sides can make it across safely. Cars are traveing deceptively faster than you think and you realize it once your out there and have to hit the gas a little harder to get out of the path of the oncoming cars. People need to let the city hear our voices on this matter, nobody should have to lose their life again before they install the lights and make it safer place to cross. "

" I live in this area and have been asking city officials about what they are going to do about this area for the past 4 years! Currently, with access to Holdrege not allowing people to turn east - you have to risk your life in order to get access onto 84th to go north. If you want to go North on 84th and you are on the west side of 84th, you better step hard on the gas. With HyVee open now and WalMart opening in September - it is only going to get worse. The City needs to stop making excuses on why they can't put a light in the area and just get something done. "

" Just goes to show that it takes several deaths to get a light put in.
Now that is real planning as always do not think ahead and try to prevent accidents wait for the proof. "

" It's 84th St. It's not a tiny residential street. You can't have a light every 5 blocks. Learn how to drive more carefully and slow down. "

" There is a stoplight scheduled to be installed at this intersection along with the Adams Street project. "

" Let's just put a traffic light at every intersection on 84th and make it completely impossible to get North/South across Lincoln at a reasonable time. 84th was supposed to be a by-pass, haha. You still have to stop at every mile. Here's a suggestion: require drivers over 65 to take a driving test every year. "

Comm UnSense wrote on May 30, 2008 12:25 pm:
" Don't worry. As soon as the next shipment comes in there will be a light at every corner on 84th Street. They will also make sure that none of the lights are synchronized. Then anyone that actually wants to cross Lincoln north and south can walk, because it will be faster. The new light at 84th and Havelock proves the point. Drivers entering 84th from Havelock still don't look for traffic. The law says you can turn right on a red light after you stop. It should say you can turn right on red after you stop and 'LOOK'.

Look what happened to "O" Street. They made it 6 lanes wide. Now 6 lanes of traffic can stop every block instead of only 4 lanes.

84th should have been made as a limited access road so traffic could cross through town from Cornhusker to Highway 2. If I live long enough, I hope I still have a license when they make the east bypass. Just once I'd like to go across Lincoln without missing a light. But, if its anything like the west bypass, it will have lights, too. Upon further review, I guess I'll move to a more driver friendly state when I retire. "

" People do you not know that area. It is a bad area to try to cross the sreet. What if it was a 30 year old are you going to say that people over 30 need to take a test to keep theie license. Think about it. They will just add one more light to that sreet because it will be more safe. What if that was your grandparnt or your family member would you be saying some stupid stuff like some of you are saying. Think about what you write people, someone died here and this is a serious matter. Lights will be up sooner or later but til then just be careful when your in that area. "

" I just drove through 84th and Leighton, trying to make a left turn onto 84th from Leighton. I couldn't see the on coming traffic until it was upon the intersection due to the 4-5 foot tall weeds blocking the view. Maybe this had something to do with the accident? The weeds go right up to the road. Maybe the weeds should be taken care of before there is another fatality accident at that intersection. "
