Letters, 5/22: He didn't mention Obama

Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 12:33:41 am CDT
I heard portions of the president’s speech to the Knesset restating the longtime policy of the United States not to negotiate with terrorists and the president’s soft condemnation of those in 1939 who sought to appease Adolf Hitler. It contained no reference to the Democratic Party nor to Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee.

I have been concerned about patriotism of those in both political parties who voted to go to war and then criticize the president for trying to win. I have wondered what Obama’s views on the war on terror are. But the president’s comments did not cause me to think of the Democrats or of  Obama — they caused me to think of former President Carter, who recently went to the Middle East to negotiate with Hezbollah, a terrorist group.

Obama and the Democrats, however, took the president’s comments condemning appeasement as a personal criticism of them.

They seem much like the lad who, having a guilty knowledge of a broken window, immediately says when his father calls him that it wasn’t his baseball that broke the window, even though his father doesn’t yet know the window was broken and was calling to take him to get a pop.

Apparently like this lad, Obama and the Democrats know they are appeasers so assume any talk about appeasers is about them leaping, because of their own guilty knowledge, to defend themselves before they have been accused.

State should uphold laws

The debate over whether illegal immigrants deserve protection by the state misses the mark. The real issue is not about whether illegal immigrants deserve protection. The pertinent issue is whether the state is going to prosecute lawbreakers.

If we follow the logic that it is OK to discriminate against illegal immigrants, would it then be acceptable to steal from them, to assault them or to kill them? Are we ready to go down that path? If not, let’s uphold our laws. If our current attorney general is unwilling to do that, it is time to replace him.

Watch for motorcyclists

Now that the summer is here, there are more motorcycles on the streets of Lincoln. All automobile drivers need to be more alert this summer with more people riding to save money on gas.

The vast majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by auto drivers. Statistically, the most common cause of auto accidents is auto drivers pulling out from side streets into motorcycle paths and turning left in intersections.

Auto drivers often claim, “I didn’t see him.” Riders are watching out for you, so please watch out for them.

Man let down by society

In regard to the article “Lincoln man dies at detox center”, please don’t be too quick to judge and dismiss a man who clearly was let down by society.

Lonnie Miller was a victim of addiction and neglect. The fact that he had been arrested 256 times illustrates a severe lack in our community to understand and treat addiction. It’s deplorable in a country as rich as ours that someone could live, and ultimately die, in such a way.

I didn’t personally know Miller, but I know that he was someone’s son, a friend, a volunteer, a member of our society. Those are all the facts I need to know that he did not deserve this. Rest in peace, Lonnie.
