Class A Pvs.

  1. Papillion-La Vista (37-6) 1

  2. Grand Island (29-6) 5

  3. Millard North (33-3) 2

  4. Omaha Marian (35-6) 3

  5. Lincoln East (30-6) 4

  6. Bellevue East (25-11) 7

  7. Lincoln SW (25-10) 6

  8. Millard South (18-14) —

  9. Millard West (16-19) 8

10. Papillion-LV South (19-15) 9

Comments: Grand Island’s wins over Lincoln East and Millard North on its run to the state finals and Millard South’s victory against Lincoln Southwest in the district finals account for this week’s changes. That was Southwest’s only loss to a team outside the top seven all season, so the Silver Hawks are only punished with a one-spot demotion. Bellevue East won the lone matchup against Southwest this season.

Class B Pvs.

  1. Lincoln Pius X (35-4) 2

  2. Northwest (32-4)  1

  3. Omaha Skutt (30-6) 3

  4. Omaha Gross (24-13) 4

  5. Holdrege (23-7)  5

  6. Aurora (21-10)  6

  7. Elkhorn (21-15) 7

  8. Beatrice (21-11) 8

  9. Ogallala (23-11) 9

10. Omaha Mercy (21-9) 10

Comments: The only change is Pius X regaining the top spot by sweeping Northwest in the state finals. Everything else went according to form in the postseason.

Class C-1  Pvs.

  1. Ord (27-2) 3

  2. Kearney Catholic (25-5) 2

  3. St. Paul (22-7) 6

  4. Minden (29-7) 4

  5. Hershey (22-5) 5

  6. Centennial (27-6) 10

  7. Norfolk Catholic (29-1) 1

  8. Syracuse (30-3) 7

  9. Columbus Scotus (17-9) 9

10. Columbus LV (18-8) 8

Comments: Centennial salvaged a top 10 ranking by its outstanding state tournament performance, beating previously unbeaten and No. 1 Norfolk Catholic in the first round and then pushing Minden to the limit before falling in the semifinals. Norfolk Catholic’s lack of schedule hurt the Knights in the final ratings. Centennial was the first rated C-1 team Norfolk Catholic had played since the Knights defeated Columbus Lakeview in the Columbus Scotus Invitational on Sept. 1. Bishop Neumann, which beat Centennial in the district final, lost to both No. 9 Columbus Scotus and No. 10 Columbus Lakeview during the regular season, so the Cavaliers can’t crack the top 10.

Class C-2 Pvs.

  1. GI Central Catholic (34-1) 1

  2. Cambridge (26-4)  3

  3. Thayer Central (26-2) 2

  4. West Point CC (22-8) —

  5. Heartland (25-6) 8

  6. Alma (22-5) 5

  7. NP St. Pat’s (20-7) 10

  8. Aquinas (17-14)  —

  9. Elmwood-Murdock (28-4) 4

10. Lourdes CC (22-7) 6

Comments: Heartland’s subdistrict win over Thayer Central and West Point Central Catholic’s conquest of Heartland in the first round at state explains the changes in the middle of the top 10. Thayer Central’s 2-1 record this season against Heartland keeps the Titans No. 3. Alma and North Platte St. Pat’s were in the same district as Cambridge, so their rankings are solid. Aquinas is rewarded for its district wins over previously No. 4 Elmwood-Murdock and No. 7 Cross County. Lourdes’ higher wild-card point average gives them the edge over Cross Country for the No. 10 spot.

Class D-1 Pvs.

  1. Bancroft-Rosalie (30-2) 3

  2. Humphrey SF (25-5) 4

  3. Archbishop Bergan (27-6) 1

  4. Freeman (25-7) 2

  5. Lawrence-Nelson (21-8) 5

  6. Shelton (26-5) 6

  7. Eustis-Farnam (23-7) 7

  8. Humphrey (19-4) 9

  9. Pope John (19-10) 10

10. College View (16-5) —

Comments: College View enters the top 10 after Meridian beat previously No. 8 Clay Center in the subdistrict tournament. College View defeated Meridian in the final week of the regular season, then pushed Freeman to four games in the subdistrict tournament.

Class D-2 Pvs.

  1. Paxton (26-1) 2

  2. Ewing (30-1) 1

  3. Falls City SH (19-11) 5

  4. Chambers (22-7) 3

  5. Giltner (20-6) 6

  6. Hampton (30-3) 4

  7. Sterling (20-11) 7

  8. Pleasanton (24-5) 9

  9. Potter-Dix (18-8) —

10. Dodge (17-11) —

Comments: Dodge moves in at No. 10 after winning a district that included previously No. 8 Elba and No. 10 Greeley-Wolbach. Potter-Dix also benefits from Dodge’s district success. Hampton reached the state semifinals, but the Hawks are still demoted for losing to Giltner in the subdistrict tournament. Falls City Sacred Heart rises two spots for its win over Giltner in the district final and conquest of Chambers at state.

" Regarding volleyball ratings. How could C1 volleyball ratings not include Centennial. They are 9-1 and many teams have played 3 games. Their only loss ws to GICC in the Minden tournament. They won over rated Elmwood-Murdock, Seward, Malcom and Valentine. Centennial is # 1 in Wildcard points right now, and they are not even in the top 10 for LJS. "

Another Centennial Fan & Volleyball Fan wrote on September 11, 2007 9:02 pm:
" To "Centennial Fan" just remember that these are strictly 1 opinion....don't know for sure if the OWH opinion is the correct one either....C-1 is a VERY even class this year. It's still very early in the season, which is the reason that many teams have only played 3 games....and many of those teams' wins are against battle tested teams. I don't think we can say that wins vs. EM, Seward, Malcolm, and Valentine equal wins against teams the likes of Scotus, Kearney Catholic, etc....Yes our girls' WC point # looks great, but we've got to take into consideration who our girls' wins are against. Don't get me wrong, I think our girls are very talented, but I don't think we'll know just how good they really are until they tested by a top level team. Like I said, keep it all in perspective and remember that it's all someone else's opinion. Let's just continue to support our girls and keep cheering them on as they work to "sneak up" on some people!! "

" I am confused as to how Southwest could possibly be third. They weren't in any top tournaments and have not played top ranked teams. I agree they should be ranked but third? in front of Millard North? very interesting.. "

" No team will improve more over the courese of a season than Scotus. Coach Peterson will have them ready come district time - and I wouldn't be surprised if they qualify for state once again. They have a tough district but having a great coach sure doesn't hurt. "

" Giltner didn't lose to Kenesaw at the Elba Tournament- that's posted wrong on the NSAA site. Giltner actually won the tournament in a three-way tie because of point differential. "

" i know that there is alot of great talent in the eastern part of the state but lets not forget the kids in the western part of the state as well as a parent of a volleyball player for Hitchcock county i just wanted people to know that we have something very special going on here that has never really happened to this school and this is my way of showing support for our girls and all the schools out west "

easterner wrote on September 26, 2007 12:11 pm:
" Dear Outwest. Of course the western part of the state gets no respect! Look at their records at the state tournament! Respect must be earned to get given. "

western volleyball fan wrote on September 26, 2007 2:01 pm:
" regarding the uneducated easterner. Paxton has been to state 7 consecutive times earning 2 state titles and a runner up. They've earned it, so why not show some respect. Here's to great volleyball programs in all parts of Nebraska. "

western volleyball fan wrote on September 26, 2007 2:05 pm:
" I was wrong Paxton has won 3 state titles and a runner up in the past 7 years not 2. "

easterner wrote on September 26, 2007 8:17 pm:
" There is one! Way to go Coach Rhodes as he is from pretty much eastern nebraska. I am not going to dis that program as he is a coaching genius! But respect can't be won off of one team. It takes time and consistency. That is all. Maybe you can poll the North Platte Paper. They cover you out there and since the ratings are as the Centennial Fan noted "one persons perception". That is all "

C-2 Fan wrote on October 8, 2007 6:39 pm:
" There is one glitch in the ratings from last week that I'm hoping will be fixed. I have seen each of the top five teams play, or at least what I deem to be the top five- GICC, Thayer Central, Alma, Cambridge and Lourdes. Heartland is a nice team and I understand that they are the defending State champions, but I doubt that Mr. Powell has seen all of these play because the Huskies are not on the same level as those other five. Of the five, I really think Cambridge is as good as any- yes I know, even GICC. Thayer was also very impressive. Those three are in a class of their own. GICC/Cambridge will make a nice district final and State semifinal. "

C-2 Fan wrote on October 21, 2007 2:14 pm:
" Why isn't Cambridge third? They absolutely pounded Alma yesterday and have wins over McCook, Hershey, NP St. Pat's, Elm Creek, Hitchcock County- I'm probably missing some, but there's no way that there're are four better teams than the Lady Trojans. GICC and Thayer Central beware. Cambridge is red hot. "

small school sports fan wrote on October 30, 2007 1:54 pm:
" Cambridge is good but they are ripe to be upset. The Alma-St. pat's winner could possible spoil the Trojans dream. Sorry C-2 fan "

Chieftan VB Fan wrote on October 31, 2007 8:55 am:
" Bellevue East lost their 3rd leading scorer Mallory Babic for the season to a knee injury four weeks ago. Only a freshman, Miss Babic has already received interest from two Big XII schools for volleyball. Bellevue East has reshuffled their lineup and are ready for a late season push. Villanova recruit Tara Andreason and nationally touted Sarah Kemp will bolster their team. "

vball bleacher bum wrote on November 12, 2007 10:56 pm:
" Norfolk Catholic's slide to #7 wasn't justified. The only reason their schedule wasn't filled with ranked C-1 foes is the raters. West Point-Beemer is very deserved of a top 10 spot, and Wisner-Pilger and Wayne were rated in some top 10s earlier in the year. WP-B for example, beat Seward, which beat your #10 team (Lakeview). Ratings are subjective. I'm not from Norfolk, but have seen as many volleyabll games and teams as I could, and Norfolk Catholic is still cream of crop in C-1. Centennial beat them, but there were other factors in that loss that some will never understand. C-1 was very balanced, and if you threw Ord into another subdistrict or district, it might not even have made state. That's not taking anything away from Ord. They won it all. Norfolk Catholic also handled with ease the #4 C-2 team, so what you are saying by demoting them to #7 is that there is a wide disparity between C-1 and C-2 teams.NC should have a higher ranking and Scotus and Lakeview should not be in top 10. "

Kroc wrote on November 13, 2007 9:56 am:
" Seeing so many private schools ranked in each class proves once again that the class assignments by the NSAA are in need of repair. NSAA should fix this problem that has been going on in all sports for many years or they should start advocating for school vouchers so all students have an choice of going to a private school. "

State Volleyball Alum wrote on November 13, 2007 2:50 pm:
" Hey, Easterner....How bout Ogallala?? Now there is another great Western Nebraska team....outwest is right, there are several western nebraska teams who don't get much recognition "

Just a Dad wrote on November 13, 2007 3:08 pm:
" OK Kroc, lets talk. I do not understand your point. I believe that Nebraska has an open enrollment policy, so kids can basically attend any school they wish. I know it's not that simple, but it's not that simple to say "private schools" are causing problems with the NSAA class assignments. How would you justify what schools would be 'adjusted'. Simply because they are private? Why wouldn't you adjust the schools that have combined Districts? (Heartland, Scribner-Snyder, Thayer County and the like) They have the advantage of drawing students from multipule towns. I'm not sure, but I'd bet just about every "private school" out there would gladly accept students, weather they play sports or not. I do not believe that this space was intended for this kind of debate. But I would like to say I spent last weeked watching some very good teams play each other tooth and nail, and the only problem I had was the way Pershing ran their facility. Making every one wait nearly two hours in line between sessions. "

Kroc wrote on November 13, 2007 10:36 pm:
" This is the right place for my opinion. I looked at the rankings, as I have done for several years and once again, the private schools have far more teams proportionally ranked than public schools. Private schools have about a four to one advantage to obtain a berth and top ten rankings in this state. Other states make an adjustment. I'm don't advocate how to do it, but I do think the system is unfair. Have you ever done a study? All the info you need can be found on the NSAA site. Once again, look at the final rankings of each class except A. No, everyone that wants to attend a private school can not attend. Yes, they can select different public schools............ "

Also a dad wrote on November 14, 2007 1:37 am:
" I think the point Kroc is trying to make is that it's hard to justify a school like Oakland-Craig (C-2) and Wisner-Pilger (C-1) competing on even terms with schools like GICC (C-2) and Norfolk Catholic (C-1) considering the population base the latter schools have to draw from. Those are schools in cities with populations over 20,000. And they are, at times, selective in who they admit. I have nothing against the private schools.... Yes, there is open enrollment, which is abused. So if we are to correct the advantage some private schools have, we also have to rein in some of what's happening with open enrollment. By the way Kroc, the state - not the kid's parent - pays the receiving district when a kid open enrolls from one school to another. So the state does have a voucher system... it's just that it only pays public schools to take open enrollment kids and not private schools to take new students. Open enrollment is big business to some schools, and the state is spending $40 million a year on the option enrollment program... "

Stuck in Middle wrote on November 14, 2007 12:46 pm:
" My concern for State Volleyball is that everyone has the opportunity to win their district and qualify. But what about those entering on a wild card. Those with great seasons get upset in district but lose out points because their points are still be considered throughout sub districts and districts. Points should stop at the end of regular season to allow those teams who have proved themselves all season to have a shot at State. Plus if the NSAA determines they must use pershing , please only 1 class. Two Classes and the atomsphere of making STATE is diminished. Plus what's up with BAND rule, they obviously threw out they're own rule. What I heard was bands making music while a game was in play.Thought that was a NO-NO. And someone needs to remind the announcer the same rull. Guess what we follow all season goes out the window for the NSAA at Pershing. Every team deserves the benefit of a gym to themselves, they all have earned that right when they are at STATE Volleyball. "
