Class A

Why No. 1:  Papillion-La Vista again takes over the reigns as the top team after beginning that way in the preseason. The Monarchs rode a 14-game winning streak into the state tournament, before being the only team to go undefeated at state. Lincoln East came through the loser’s bracket, defeating the top three ranked teams at state to finish second. Millard North remains third mostly because of its 1-0 winner’s bracket win against Westside. Papillion-La Vista South falls to sixth after bowing out the first day of the state tournament. Norfolk moves in at No. 6, largely because of its 8-7 win aginst Millard South at the state tournament. Omaha Burke drops five spots, but stays in because its two district losses were both to No. 2-ranked Lincoln East. Lincoln Southwest falls out of the rankings because three of the Silver Hawks’ last eight losses were to state tournament participants. The Silver Hawks also ended district play with a 12-2 loss to Lincoln Southeast, which finished the season with a losing record. Kearney remains No. 10, despite a 4-1 loss to Norfolk in the district tournament final.

Class B

Why No. 1: Elkhorn remains No. 1 after winning its third straight championship in Class B. Ralston advances after coming back from a 5-4 opening-round loss to Beatrice and taking the Antlers to two games in the championship. McCook moves to third after its two state tournament losses were to Elkhorn and Ralston. Fairbury drops after district losses to Aurora and Seward. Norris advances two spots after losing to McCook and Ralston, but beating Blair at state. The Bears fall four spots after an opening round loss to Norris and a 13-6 loss to Ralston. Beatrice falls after failing to advance to the championship game for the first time in nine years. Omaha Roncalli/Fort Calhoun drops out after two straight district losses.

Class C

Why No. 1: After a tumultuous year in Class C, preseason No. 1-ranked Columbus Lakeview moves back into that position after making it through the state tournament unscathed. Gothenburg jumps ahead of Bennington because Gothenburg lost its final game to then top-ranked Milford. Bennington was outsted by then No. 10 Falls City. Tekamah-Herman slips in after ousting four-year tournament participant Wayne in the districts to advance to state. Despite falling two spots, North Bend Central beats out Ashland-Greenwood for the final spot because three of their last four losses were to state tournament teams.

" Tekamah-Herman may only be 10-9 as of today, but they have split two games with No. 5 Yutan, and have only lost by one run apiece to No. 7 Bennington, No. 8 North Bend/Scribner-Snyder and No. 9 West Point Central Catholic. "

" Syracuse has had some disappointing games but, they've beat No. 7 Bennington, went into extra innings with contender Arlington, and have beaten contenders Falls City and Southern. "

" Where is Crete? Year after year Coach keeps telling the girls "We're really close!" and hasn't had been close to a winning season record for 7 years. 5-21 last year but "We're really close!" How terribly disappointing. "

" Wow - Class C's Capitol Conference must be one of the toughest in the state. # 8 seed (Wahoo) wins a play in game over Conestoga, defeats #1 seed Ashland, loses to Class B ranked Fort Calhoun and defeats #8 ranked Arlington (OWH Ranking) for 3rd place. Talk about parity! The end of this short and intense softball season should be WILD!!! Go underdogs!!!Person to watch - some little Short stop for Wahoo. The gal plays ball and loves the game!! "

" i agree with syracuse...they have apparently improved since i played them in the 2003 season, they were tough but we always took the win...from a former C class softballer to syracuse: keep up the good work, your turn will come... "

" Central City in its second year of softball finshed at 19-9 and should be in the top 10 of Class C. Their losses are to state tournament qualifiers Twin River and Milford, to Fillmore Central and to Class B perennnial power Seward and Class B Aurora. Central City beat Twin River 1-0 in the semi finals of the district tournament and lost to them 3-2 in the finals. Bennington's wins over Yutan/Mead and Lakeview in the District Tournament cost Central City a place in the state tournament. "

" I find it remarkable that fillmore showed up in the top ten but Syracuse doesn't get a mention. Syracuse beat Fall city 3 times during the year, Bennington once and eliminated Fillmore handily at districts. Maybe we don't deserve the respect now but we're getting there. "

" I find it remarkable how much softball has changed. Several of these ranked teams in class C especially used to be easy wins for those that are always ranked. The talent level is really deepening. My former school just so happens to be a perennial powerhouse, while we're not as good as in years past (we missed class B state by one win the last three years, and finished with the best record of a team who didn't make it to state), it's awesome how they have to get up for every game.
