COMMENTS

Class A

Omaha Central made the long trip west to Kearney pay dividends and the Eagles earned their first state title since 1984. Millard North avenged a loss to Millard West to earn its finals berth. Grand Island moves up four spots after its 14-7 loss to Central, the Eagles’ closest playoff game until the finals.

Class B

Crete defended its title to make the Cardinals only the third back-to-back champion in Class B playoff history. McCook (2002-03) and Lincoln Pius X (1997-98) are the others. It was the first overtime final in Class B. Beatrice moves up with its 63-62 overtime win over Gross. Hastings avenged its loss to Seward, which tumbles, allowing Waverly and Norris to move up.

Class C-1

Pierce needed a flurry at the end to claim its first title since 1978 with an overtime victory over Bishop Neumann. The Bluejays also ended the season for the next three teams in the ratings. Bennington moves in after making it to the semifinals.

Class C-2

After its first-round win, Wakefield had to beat rated opponents the rest of the way, topping Laurel-Concord, Elmwood-Murdock, Hartington Cedar Catholic and runner-up Blue Hill. Hartington Cedar Catholic makes a climb with a win over Archbishop Bergan. Howells fell to Elmwood-Murdock to slip.

Class D-1

Pope John was the best of the west and carries several of the teams it left in its wake in the playoffs into the ratings. Elwood, which handed previous No. 1 Hayes Center its first loss, led the Crusaders 21-7 before Pope John rallied for a 40-21 win. Palmer suffered its first loss at the hands of Pope John, which also beat Wauneta-Palisade.

Class D-2

Chambers rallied for the win over Elgin to prevent the eight-man sweep by the small town in northeast Nebraska. Ewing, which handed Chambers its other loss, lost to Elgin in the quarterfinals after falling to Pope John in the regular season. Dodge lost twice to Elgin this season.

" To bad Lincoln Southwest couldn't survive all their injuries. This was to be the Silverhawks year to take state. "

" She actually put Crete at #1 for a change.I guess she is too stupid to realize they have gone undefeated and won the championship last year. I guess if you are Crete you have to wim back to back championships and go undefeated. Well anyways go CARDINALS!!!!!!!! "

" Nice PJ. even without injuries, the Siverhawks wouldn't have "taken state." They still would have been the second or third best team in the city....... "

" Elgin is ranked 2 and HTRS is ranked 7. It was a formatting issue. Look above. "

" If Clarkson was runner up in the D-1 championship game, wouldn't that put them in 2nd place in the final rankings? Give me and the team a break. "

" jb, Clarkson has three losses and Palmer, Elwood and Hays Center only had one loss. Palmer played Pope John closer than Clarkson. I watched both games. Their ranking is deserving as the west was a tougher bracket this year. Untill the NSAA seads based records first and points second this will continue to happen where one barcket is loaded with undefeated teams and the other is not as strong. "

Thomas Korman wrote on November 21, 2007 12:58 pm:
" Stanton (C-2) lost to Hartington 14-7...how are they not in the top ten. I think East Butler and Burwell had good years, but realistically do not belong in the top 10. I think Mrs. Hambleton just looks at the playoff brackets and see who ended the year and where. "

JB is right wrote on November 21, 2007 2:58 pm:
" I agree with JB. The west is never a tough as their records appear. Being in the east everyone including Clarkson beat each other up. Clarkson lost by 9, the teams that Pope John beat lost by more than 9. The journal star proves it every year that they don't pay enough attention to the smaller classes to rate them correctly. "

Jim wrote on November 21, 2007 7:09 pm:
" Stop whining Clarkson fans - you may have lost by only 9 to PJ but 2 of your scores were late in the game on the other teams reserves. The west bracket this year was stronger this year in C1 & D1. THe east bracket was stronger in B & C2. "
