Creighton softball falls to Long Beach State
Long Beach State’s Casey Burba scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday when Creighton first baseman Renae Sinkler bobbled the throw from pitcher Tara Oltman after the Bluejays had intentionally loaded the bases, giving the 49ers a 2-1 win at the Iowa City Regional.
The 49ers opened the eighth with a single up the middle by Jennifer Griffin. Burba came in to pinch run for her. With one out, Burba stole second and advanced to third off a bloop single by Lacy Tyler. Ashley Levine was intentionally walked, loading the bases to set up a force at the plate, before the error scored Burba.
Despite the loss, Oltman tied or broke several Creighton pitching records.
The Beatrice graduate broke the record for innings pitched in a season with 269, surpassing the 2631/3 pitched by Kelly Brookhart in 1991. She also tied the complete-game record set by Fremont’s Tammy Nielsen with 32. The sophomore also became just the second Bluejay to record 500 strikeouts in a career, tying Nielsen.
Creighton committed four errors in the game, while the 49ers committed three.
The Bluejays scored their only run in the top of the fifth. Jessi Jadlowski connected on an RBI-single up the middle to Liz McKewon.
No. 18 Long Beach State opened the scoring with two outs in the first. Brooke LeSage walked, stole second and scored on a single by Griffin.
Creighton will face the loser of the second game, which pitted Missouri against Iowa.
