East girls lose 3-2 to Westside
OMAHA — As good as Rebecca Crabb’s season has been, she never scored three goals in one game.
Not until the first round of the Class A State High School Soccer Tournament that is. Crabb scored three goals to lead fourth-ranked Omaha Westside to a 3-2 overtime victory against No. 7 Lincoln East on Wednesday.
Crabb scored the game-winning goal with three minutes remaining in overtime. She headed the ball into the corner of the net off Sarah Nelson’s corner kick. It was the only goal of overtime.
Crabb has 22 goals this season, but needed to play at state to get a chance at a three-goal game.
“Senior year, too,” Crabb said.
She showed her versatility, scoring goals with her foot, her back and her head.
“This won’t sound pretty,” Westside coach Don Gilpin said, “but there’s nothing pretty about Rebecca Crabb. She just finds a way.”
All four regulation goals came in the second half in a back-and-forth match. Each time Westside scored, East answered within five minutes.
East’s Kelly Howe scored with four minutes remaining to force overtime. Alexa Ross also scored for the Spartans (10-6).
“Those girls played great,” East coach Chuck Morgan said. “No regrets.”
Omaha Westside (17-3) defeated beat East 2-1 earlier this season. East did a better job on defense this time, and the Spartans’ counterattack caused Westside fits, Gilpin said.
“We continued to improve all year, and have a lot of talented kids,” Morgan said. “If we might have got a bounce or two tonight, it might have been a different story.”
