Omaha Marian too much for Gators
OMAHA — It looked like it might be a long match for Lincoln North Star after Omaha Marian's Margaret Powers scored just six minutes into the District A-5 girls soccer final at Marian on Wednesday.
But the Class A 10th-ranked Gators recovered and had numerous chances to even the score. But the Gators ultimately couldn't capitalize and lost 2-0 to the third-ranked Crusaders.
"We started out slow and real tentative," North Star coach Matt Avey said. "Unfortunately, they caught us in the first six minutes. At that point, I didn't know how the rest of the game would go because we were really behind the ball.
“That picked up in the first half and second half I felt really good about how hard we played and we won the midfield a lot more.”
North Star junior Siteena Ebrahim had an open look that was stopped 15 minutes into the game. With less than five minutes left in the first half, Ebrahim found junior Zaina Mayer open in front of the net. Again, the Gators couldn't punch one in as the shot missed high.
Mayer got another chance in the 62nd minute, but her header once again missed high. Marian's Kristin Jones scored on a rebound 10 minutes later to put the game away.
"This team (Marian) has only been scored on four or five times this whole year," Avey said. "We had a few opportunities, unfortunately we didn't finish. When you don't finish those against a team like Marian, you're going to end up on the short end.”
