What you need to know about Saltdog games
The Lincoln Saltdogs play their first home game of the season Friday night, and just in case beer, brats and baseball aren’t enough, the games, as always, will have a lot more to offer.
Here are four things you should know about the upcoming season.
1. Free stuff
This year, the park will offer two new theme days.
On T-shirt Tuesdays, 1,000 shirts will be shot out to the crowd.
And on Supertrip Saturdays, the Saltdogs will give a vacation to one lucky attendee. The trips start out modest at the beginning of the season (this Saturday, it’s a trip to see a Kansas City Royals game). But at the end of the season, they get grander — a trip to the Caribbean, for instance.
2. Wiener Wednesdays
As they have before, the Saltdogs games will host the Wiener Dog Nationals every Wednesday.
At the nationals, community members are invited to bring their dachshunds into Haymarket Park and race them. Fill out an entry form at saltdogs.com.
3. New faces
“We’ve got a lot of new players this year, as well as a few of the same guys,” said Tim Utrup, vice president and general manager. “Only a handful of the same faces, compared to years past.”
Utrup said a few of the former players reached the point of retirement, and a few got traded. Like local favorite Jay Yaconetti, who was traded in the off season to the Sussex Skyhawks in Augusta, N.J.
4. The whip artist
To celebrate the opening of “Indiana Jones” No. 4, which opens in theaters May 22, the Saltdogs are having an Indiana Jones theme night the same day. And entertainer Gery L. Deer, of Jamestown, Ohio, will perform his whip artistry for the crowd.
