Area news, 5/15: NWU golfers move up

The Nebraska Wesleyan men’s golf team moved up five spots to 15th place after the second day of the NCAA Division II Championships in Braselton, Ga.

The Prairie Wolves shot a 305 in Wednesday’s round, 15 shots better than their opening-day score, to move within 10 shots of cracking the top 10 in the team standings at Chateau Elan Resort.

St. John Fisher had a 294 team total for a 596 score after 36 holes and a six-shot lead over Oglethorpe.

Tyler Lawson birdied three of his final four holes to finish with a 4-over-par 75 and moved into a tie for 22nd place overall at 9-over 151.

Nate Jaeger also had a 75 and is at 11-over for the tournament. Patrick Hanzel had NWU’s top round of the day, a 2-over 73, but is at 13-over after 36 holes.

TRACK: At the Central College Last Chance Meet in Pella, Iowa, the Nebraska Wesleyan women qualified in four events for the Division III championships. Holly Andrews ran the 100 hurdles in 14.14 seconds, the second-fastest time in Division III this season. Lindsey Snowdon qualified in the hepthathlon with a score of 4,594 points, the fourth-best total in the country this season. Megan Mejstrik qualified in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 5¾ inches, while the 400 relay team of Andrews, Anne Kersenbrock, Michelle Tiedtke and Katie Dobesh qualified in 48.04 seconds.

SOFTBALL: After leading Creighton to the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, sophomore pitcher Tara Oltman (first team) and senior catcher TJ Eadus (second team) have been named to the NFCA All-Midwest Region Team in a vote of coaches.
