Nebraska men’s basketball fans wanting an up-close look at this year’s team can do so during an open workout today at 3 p.m. at the Devaney Sports Center.

And anyone wanting to peer into the Huskers’ future beyond 2007-08 might want to scan the sidelines tonight before the USC-Nebraska football game at Memorial Stadium.

That’s where a handful of basketball recruits will be spending part of their weekend visit to Lincoln.

Colton Iverson, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound power forward from Yankton, S.D., is the only one of the recruits making an official visit. Iverson has narrowed his list to Creighton, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota and Nebraska. He also had an offer from two-time defending national champion Florida.

The only other high school senior believed to be in the group is Garrett Stutz, a 7-foot, 225-pound center from Kansas City, Mo.

Stutz, who’s visiting unofficially, has offers from Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas State and Wichita State, among others.

Some high school underclassmen are also planning unofficial visits this weekend, including brothers Greg Smith, a junior, and Dwight Smith, a sophomore, from Ralston High School.

Another junior, Houston power forward Ray Turner, is visiting unofficially. The 6-8, 225-pound Turner is also being recruited by Baylor, Arizona State, Texas A&M, New Mexico State and New Mexico.

Nebraska has already had an official visit from a junior college big man. Orlando Allen, a 6-10, 285-pound center from Paris (Texas) Junior College, visited Lincoln two weekends ago. In addition to Nebraska, Allen has offers from Oklahoma and Minnesota.

Also, Roburt Sallie, who signed with Nebraska but wasn’t deemed eligible by the NCAA clearinghouse, says he’s still planning on becoming a Husker, beginning in the 2008-09 season. Sallie, a 6-5, 195-pound forward, is playing this season at City College of San Francisco.

The Huskers lose one scholarship player off their 2007-08 team — senior center Aleks Maric.

Speaking of this year’s Huskers, second-year coach Doc Sadler is inviting fans to watch today’s 90-minute workout. The team will split and work in small groups for a short period, as allowed by NCAA rules, then use the court for free play.

Of eight new scholarship players, two may not participate in today’s workout.

Freshman forward Alonzo Edwards is recovering from a strained groin muscle and subsequent infection, and sophomore transfer Alex Chapman had microscopic knee surgery two weeks ago. Edwards should return to workouts Monday, Sadler said, while Chapman may be out another week.

Fans coming to today’s workout can park at State Fair Park, where there is no reserved football parking, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fans can enter the Sports Center on the south side lower level entrance, beginning at 3 p.m., and are asked to sit on the main concourse in the lower-level chair-back seats.
