Broken Bow nixes school bond
By The Associated Press
A new hospital and a new performing arts center were among the local issues decided during Nebraska’s primary elections on Tuesday.
Central City approved a new 520-seat, $4.6 million performing arts center. Just six months ago, a similar measure failed.
In Valley County, voters approved a $21.2 million hospital project. Officials said federal Medical reimbursement would cover about 70 percent of the cost and that growth and extra revenue from the new hospital would cover the remainder.
In Broken Bow, a $9.4 million bond issue for a new elementary school was overwhelmingly defeated, and a levy override of 15 cents per $100 of taxable valuation also failed.
School board member Kevin Cooksley blamed the losses on voter unhappiness with high gas prices and other economic problems.
“This isn’t just about the money,” Cooksley told The Grand Island Independent. “We’re going to have to have a serious discussion about what the community wants, and we will live with what the community tells us they want.”
