Challenger Barbara Baier and incumbent Bernie Heier secured the most votes in their respective races for seats on the Lancaster County Board, according to unofficial primary election results.

But the contest for the two open seats is a trial run. All four candidates will advance to the Nov. 4 general election.

In District 2, representing the county’s northwestern corner, Democrat Baier captured 1,941 votes, to incumbent Republican Larry Hudkins’ 1,549.

In District 4, representing eastern portions of the county, Republican Heier won 4,011 votes. Democratic challenger Nancy Intermill captured 3,314 votes.

The candidates who will face each other in November appeared on separate ballots in Tuesday’s partisan primary. There are about 5,000 more Republicans than Democrats registered in Lancaster County.

Baier said she was pleased with the showing, saying it will offer some traction heading into the general election. She hopes to ramp up meetings with community groups in coming months and also plans to spend more time educating herself on the issues, she said.

Heier, who is seeking his third term on the board, said he will continue to campaign strong with the focus remaining on issues like the new jail and the budget.

County commissioners serve four-year terms. They oversee a budget of about $170 million, which accounts for about 13 percent of property tax collections.

" Hudkins and Heier are NOT for economic development as demonstrated last year by approving zoning to restrict motorsports in Lancaster County. The Drag Racing facility was a very discussed issue last year in the Journal Star and many people and businesses were excited on the prospect of a private developer creating a facility and a venue to promote tourism to our County especially since the fair is now leaving our city. Vote change, vote for Intermill and Baier come November. Lancaster County needs to work with the city to attract new businesses not drive them away. "

" After the debacle of the unnecessary jail that will only end up incarcerating even more people and the false choice they gave us on how we get to pay for this cruel folly, it is time to vote the incumbents out! Let's put some intelligent and serious representatives in charge. "

" I wish issues like the Drag Racing could have been on the ballot. Why don't the fanatics who want the drag racing start a petition drive and see how far it gets. I don't think it would make it very far and we could quit listening to the subject. "

" Out with the old and in with the new. This is just a sign that the tax payers of Lancaster county want change. Just wait untill it's Bob Workmans time. He will only have 14 votes from the 14 homes within a mile of him. "

" I agree with Bill, put the drag strip on the ballot so the community can let the commissioners know it's only a select group interested in drag racing "

" I agree with Bill as well, put the Drag Strip issue on the Ballet. It would be nice to vote for something that is using private money instead of public money for the benefit of the community with jobs and revenue. Instead we vote on bonds for the public to pay for jails and new arenas. A UNL study conducted last year showed the impact and benefits it would provide to our area and proof is shown throughout our Nation on what Motorsports had done for a community. Vote YES for the private sector in creating jobs and revenue that will benefit the city of Lincoln. "
