Former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey will serve as chairman for the campaign finance committee of Max Yashirin, a Democrat running for Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District seat.

The 25-year-old Yashirin faces Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, who’s in his second term.

Yashirin spent a year in Iraq in 2004 with the Marine Reserves and now works with people with mental and physical disabilities at Region 5 Services. He’s finishing his degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Yashirin calls Kerrey an “American hero,’’ and says he’s excited to have the veteran politician’s help.

Kerrey says he believes in Yashirin’s vision for new direction in Washington.

Kerrey, a former Nebraska governor, is president of The New School university in New York.

" Who is Yashirin....I read/watch the news daily, and I've never heard of the guy! But...then he is a Democrat! He
spent one year in Iraq in 2004, has no business experience and lacks a formal education! And he wants to represents us in the Congress! This is crazy!! Is the Nebraska Democratic Party really this desperate? Oh, I forgot....he is going to bring Nebraskans "change," which is the key word for liberals from coast to coast. Change from what to what and how are they going to pay for this change they can not define? Answer: Democrats plan to increase tax to pay for their undefined change! "

" Mr. Yashirin is a vet, and he could have interested a lot of Nebraskans. Well that's not the case now. This will be seen as a New York liberal from academia raising east coast money for him. He'll fare worse this way. "

" You don't need a formal education to make moral and sound judgements George Bush's Yale education has done him squat. Give the kid and chance and hear what he has to say. "

" Opinion, last time I checked, Bob Kerry is distinguished, intelligent, and patriotic, but not much of a liberal.

Iraq Vet, Marine Sgt.Max Yasharin is going to unseat our totally undistinguished Congressman, The Louisiana Carpetbagger, Jeff Fortenberry.
Max, the son of Russian immigrants, served 5 years in the Marines, and is enrolled at UNL. This 25-year -old is a breath of fresh air in the semistale world of politics. Behind the grin, there is a sense of Patriotism, service and dedication that belongs in the halls of Congress. Check the website and consider a donation.

" You'd think that there would be enough activity in New York to keep Mr. Kerrey busy without involving himself in politics occuring thousands of miles away. Like Hillary, anyone that he involves himself with moves my vote to another candidate. Find a hobby in your resident state, Bob. "

" bob kerry is an ultra-liberal has-been who never met a tax hike, government spending program, or abortion procedure he didn't support. Go ahead Max and try to win eastern Nebraska on a platform like that. "

2. Don't be so smug.
3. Yashirin can't possibly be worse than Fort. "

" So a former Nebraska Senator and Govenor is going to help a candidate raise some money, how dare he*sarcasm*. Max was detasseling corn when Fortenberry was shucking shrimp in Louisiana. "

" I went ahead and checked out the website that a supporter listed in an earlier post. In the bio on Max Yahirin it states that he works for "Regent 5". I assume that is supposed to be "Region 5"?? Attention to detail. Perhaps if Max wants to impress people and run a campaign it might help to have someone proofread your page's content. Is this what we want in Congress? "

" Max is going to need more than Bob Kerrey on his side to win this election. Jeff has been doing a stellar job in his role as a Representative from Nebraska. His education and background show that he is capable of continuing to lead our district proudly. As for shucking shrimp, you try it sometime; it's no easier than detassling. "

" Max is not someone who needs to be making decisions for the state. He is riding that he is a one year vet, I know guys in the Army Reserves that spent more time in Iraq. He will not help our state at all. "

LincolnRepublican wrote on April 10, 2008 2:23 pm:
" Forget Fortenberry. I am done with him. He hasn't found a spending bill he didn't like. We are nine-trillion dollars in debt and keeps supporting massive spending measures. He even voted for a bill that the Heritage Foundation has called a "pork-fest for wealth beach-front property owners." This country can't survive the people we've elected anymore. That is why the whole country is backing CHANGE!!! Though, I am still voting McCain. "

" It's truly amazing that someone who served this country with distinction overseas, left part of his body there, built successful businesses in the state for our citizens, was soundly elected Governor and Senator of a "Red" state is apparently now too liberal or out of touch to relate to Nebraskans.
However, Frankenberry sponsored HRES399 to support Mother's Day. Great bill in the time of "war". "

" I voted for Fortenberry twice and I can't do it again. He has simply been an enabler for the failed policies that have gotten us in the mess we are in today. "

JL wrote on April 21, 2008 8:53 pm:
" "Max was detasseling corn when Fortenberry was shucking shrimp in Louisiana".... Umm, nice try, but Fortenberry was serving as a Lincoln Council Member when Max was 14 years old. For the record, you peel shrimp and shuck oysters. Besides, I don't think Fortenberry ever shucked an oyster in his whole life. He comes from a long line of Farmers and Ag educators. His Grandfather was a loved and respected District Agent, his Uncle retired as Associate Director of the LSU Ag Service and his Mother spent a career there as well. Fortenberry was excelling at plant science and poultry judging in 4-H before Max was even born. It is Agriculture that is in Fortenberry's blood, and while I'm sure he's eaten his fair share of shucked oysters, I'd bet he knows a thing or two about corn as well. "

" Obviously you don't know Max. This is a young man that has the intelligence that we will all of your state representatives have. This is a young man that wants to serve his state after he has served his country, in George's War. This is a young man that has worked since high school to help support his family. This is a young man whose brother is now in Iraq. This is a young man that spent part of last summer at Oxford - in England studying International finance. This is a young man that works for Region V Developmental Disabilities Services, being a support person for 2 young gentlemen with disabilities. He helps them with their shopping, house cleaning, community social activities. ( How many of you do something like that? - NOT ENOUGH!)

Fortenberry didn't even support the SCHIP program for Children's healthcare. NUF SAID!

Max will do so much better that the FORT!
