Huskers run some option in practice

It wasn't exactly Tommie pitching to Ahman, but ...

Nebraska quarterbacks and running backs took a few moments to practice an option drill Monday.

“We got a lot of things going in the offense. That’s part of it,” Husker coach Bo Pelini said after the practice. “That will be part of our offense. How much? We’re not sure yet. But we know it’s going to be an element to our offense.”

On another note, Pelini’s former team, LSU, was at the White House on Monday to be honored for its national championship season.

Of course, Pelini was not in attendance.

“I was invited but, obviously, I had a little different agenda today,” Pelini said. “That’s about it. That’s all I got to say about that.”

Low on tight ends: Nebraska was without three tight ends for Monday’s practice. Dreu Young, Mike McNeill and Tyson Hetzer missed because of injuries, but only Hetzer’s injury appears serious.

Pelini said Hetzer, who was on crutches with his knee in a brace, will miss the rest of spring ball. “He’ll be back and ready to roll come fall,” Pelini said.

By the numbers: 3. Turnovers caused by Cody Glenn in his four practices since moving to linebacker. He had an interception in Friday’s practice, forced a fumble Saturday and had another interception Monday. “He had a heckuva practice,” Pelini said. “Practiced well.”

Scouting report: QB Kody Spano: Spano is one of two members of the February signing class who enrolled early to participate in spring practice.

Not surprisingly, Spano hasn’t exactly spurted up the depth chart.

“There’s a lot being thrown at him right now,” Pelini said. “He’s improving every day. He’s learning. That’s all you can ask for. He’s behind the other guys because he doesn’t have as many reps or as much knowledge.”

All the more reason for Spano to soak in as much as he can now.

“He’s able to learn from his mistakes, learn in the classroom,” Pelini said. “He’s going to be a lot further ahead because of it.”

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Spano, a native of Stephenville, Texas, threw for 2,263 yards and 23 touchdowns his senior season. He ran for 366 yards and 11 TDs.

Opponent watch: Oklahoma: Joey Halzle appears to have solidified his spot at No. 2 quarterback behind returning starter Sam Bradford after two spring scrimmages, according to The Oklahoman.

Halzle has the edge over sophomore Keith Nichol and true freshman Landry Jones.

Halzle continued a strong spring by completing 14 of 22 passes for 177 yards and no turnovers in a scrimmage Saturday. Nichol was 5-of-15 for 78 yards and an interception.

In two scrimmages, Halzle has completed 59 percent of his passes with no interceptions. Nichol has completed 29 percent of his attempts, with three interceptions. Jones has only one completion in limited time.

Bradford is 21-of-36 for 262 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.
