Thursday's results
Lance Juelfs led Potter-Dix with 15 points. The Coyotes finished their season 13-9.
St. Mary's 48, Ewing 46: For St. Mary’s coach Gary Chvala, it was simply the biggest win in school history when his Class D-2 team shocked Ewing 48-46 in the Boys State Basketball Tournament on Thursday at Lincoln Southeast.
It would be hard to argue that point. Not only did the O’Neill school get its first state-tournament win in eight trips, but the eighth-ranked Cardinals (21-3) beat a Holt County neighbor (18 miles away) that was ranked No. 1 with a gaudy 24-0 record. They also avenged a 49-30 loss at Ewing Jan. 10, and did it by overcoming second-half deficits of 10 points early in the third quarter and eight points early in the fourth.
“I think it’s probably the biggest win in St. Mary’s history, because we’ve been here eight times and hadn’t been here for 22 years, and we’d never won a game in the state tournament — and now we have,” Chvala said. “And we’re looking for (No.) 2 tomorrow.”
St. Mary’s trailed 41-33 after a basket by Ewing’s Austin Krotter with 7 minutes and 47 seconds left in the game, but the Cardinals held the Tigers to one field goal the rest of the way and closed with a 15-5 run.
Andrew Krotter hit a three from deep in the right corner to tie the score at 44-44 with 2:36 to go, and it was tied again at 46 two minutes later when Ewing committed its 13th turnover — an errant pass that the Cardinals’ Cody Eiler turned into a layup and the winning basket with 15 seconds remaining.
St. Mary’s center Zack Sibble had game highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds, including eight points in the fourth quarter and eight rebounds in the second half. Brett Kaczor and Travis Schrunk scored 13 points apiece to lead Ewing.

Pleasanton 62, St. Edward 48
The second-ranked Bulldogs outscored the seventh-ranked Beavers 24-7 over the final 6 minutes to unseat the defending Class D-2 champions at Lincoln East.
Pleasanton (22-1) won its 18th game in a row by going 7-for-10 from the field and 13-of-19 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, while forcing the Beavers into misses on 14 of their last 15 shots.
The key, said coach Randy Bauer, was a second-half switch to a box-and-one defense to stop Shavontae Samuels after the St. Edward star scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in leading the Beavers (20-4) to a 26-21 halftime lead.
“We wanted to save the box-and-one for the second half because they hadn’t seen it,” Bauer said. “I challenged Jordan (Axmann) to see if he could contain him (Samuels) and he did. I think we got him frustrated.”
Samuels, a 6-foot senior, was 5-of-15 from the field in the second half and finished with game highs of 35 points and 15 rebounds. Trevor Paitz led four Bulldog scorers in double figures with 19, 14 of which came in the second half.
Hampton 45, Bruning-Davenport 44
Dylan Bamesberger hit a three--pointer from deep in the right corner with 3 seconds left to lift the sixth-ranked Hawks and ruin the third-ranked Storm’s rally from an 8-point deficit early in the fourth quarter.
For Bamesberger, who averages 7.7 points per game, it was the only three of the night as he finished with nine points.
Bruning-Davenport (20-6) trailed 36-28 with 7 minutes and 28 seconds left in the game, but rallied to take a 45-44 lead when junior center Brent Houchins converted a traditional three-point play with 26 seconds remaining. The Storm still almost pulled it out after Bamesberger’s shot, but Garrett Hoins’ three-pointer rimmed off at the buzzer.
Dwayne Wall led Hampton (20-4) with 15 points. Houchins scored 15 and Hoins 10 for the Storm.
