P.O. Pears to close
BY Cory MATTESON / Lincoln Journal Star
Bob Jergensen put his arm around a rookie three weeks on the job, and the P.O. Pears owner walked him into the cramped bar office to softly deliver the news.
A tight gathering at a portion of the bar called Key II Corner — the bar register key “II” signifies an employee discount — stopped regaling each other with stories and nicknames, trying to not listen.
LeAnn Price, who has worked the door here for about 10 months, lifted her eyeglasses to rub away a tear.

P.O. Pears owner talks about closing

P.O. Pears owner Robert "Bobby" Jergensen talks about his decision to close the doors and what will become of the Lincoln landmark and the m...
“It’s kind of the first time I’ve cried about it,” said Price, 21.
On the office computer screen, comments poured in beneath a news article that started something like this:
A downtown Lincoln landmark will close up shop later this month, ending a nearly three-decade run. P.O. Pears, which opened in 1980 and remains at 322 S. Ninth St., will serve its last beer March 23.
Minutes earlier, staff had been huddled around the computer as Flounder and Bob and Pat read Web comments aloud. Some came from faraway parts of the country, where old staffers now live.
Nine hundred-plus people have worked at this bar. There have been Pear weddings and Pear babies.
“Only if the tuba could talk....” Flounder, a.k.a. 13-year employee Dave Harnly, read from the screen, sending laughter into the rafters, where hangs a tuba nobody would want to reach into.
P.O. Pears was different.
“Unlike everywhere else I’ve worked in my life,” said Flounder, 34.
“Hands down,” LeAnn added.
“I got nothing,” said Kara Larson, a.k.a. Bubbles, “except for these people.”
Five-year veteran James Sandman poured a round of Krustys, a tequila-based house specialty, and the nicknames flowed.
There was Forest and Pinto. Screech. Hack. Spanker. 13 Lucky.
“Rocket! Oh my God.”
Butsie. Wass. SPO. BRile.
“Gunner. Oh God yes!”
P.O. Pears is a man, his MySpace page declares. He’s 27. Relationship-wise, a “swinger.”
The two-floor building with multiple bars, the stage and sand volleyball court lists its body type as “More to love!”
It’s the “Island of Misfit Toys,” Jergensen said. People with no life purposes got jobs here, and then found life purposes. They’ve had graduating classes of staff, some going on to become doctors, police officers.
“I tried to keep it going for the employees,” he said, “but it didn’t work out.”
Bartenders and door staff aren’t the only ones who need new homes, he said. Jazz Night does too.
Jergensen has been trying to sell the bar for two years but couldn’t find a buyer to continue to run the business. So he has decided to auction off the building, land and artifacts, furniture and fixtures separately.
Jergensen, who started working at Pears nearly 25 years ago, has owned the business since 1993 and bought the building and land in 1999. He said he felt it was time to get out of the business and spend more time with his family.
He e-mailed staff and regular musicians early Monday with the news, thanking “all the wonderful people that I have had the chance to work with: customers, vendors and employees alike. I know, and am proud of the fact, that this Big Red building has held a lot of special memories for many people.”
The business is solvent, he said, but the money it generates can’t approach the worth of the building and its contents.
Jergensen plans to auction the memorabilia, which includes props from movies such as “Dr, Zhivago” and “Tora, Tora, Tora,” and a huge pair of red lips used as the bar’s kitchen window.
That auction will be April 18, the Friday before the Nebraska spring football game. The building and land will be auctioned off the following Monday.
Between the closing and the auction, on April 8, at 6 p.m., Pears will host the 24th annual adult spelling bee, a benefit for the Heritage Room at the Lincoln City Library.
And that last night, Jergensen said, should be wild.
Price offered to come back and work the door.
“This place just has a bond and a history that’s unmatched in Lincoln,” she said.
“It’s an icon.”

We will miss the place.
We Omahans of course were not as frequent a visitor as those of Star City but we relied on them when we went to Husker games.

It was eight of the most fun years of my life. Lot's of regrets, but I wouldn't change a thing. Best employees ever, well some of them were. Some were insane. It was like throwing a party for all your friends every Friday night.
Raise your glasses people, "Here's to BOB,... a good friend!"
Raise 'em again for Uncle Ron's toast, "I'd rather drink with you people, than with the finest people on earth." "

The real truth : Your food is the worst. You were written up with health violations a month or so ago. Business hasn't been that great over the past 10 years compared to the good old days. There just really isn't anything special at Pears any more. Close your doors and be forgotten forever. This is one place I soon hope to forget!!! "

Closing it down is something that happens in the business world, but it still doesn't seem real. You always think it's going to be there for you to stop by, but guess it can't go on forever. There are too many memories to put here, but I'm sure in the next 3 weeks, I'll be there reminiscing and will be reminded of some of the ones that were lost in a Bucket O' Whip or Cherry Squishy.
There were many nights spent at Key 2 corner, at the round table, on the roof ringing in the new year, in the basement, making sugar in the back room, and I'm probably forgetting a few other choice places. POPears will definitely be missed.
Bob you were a great boss, but are a better friend. Good luck in everything!
