Huskers snag safety recruit
Another day, another commitment from Louisiana.
The Huskers received their latest good news from P.J. Smith, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound safety from River Ridge, La.
Committing to Nebraska can sure get your cell phone buzzing, and Smith’s was, so much so that he said he wanted to wait until Tuesday to give all the details of his decision.
Smith did tell the New Orleans Times-Picayune that “it felt like I was at home” when visiting the Nebraska campus.
“They have a wonderful coaching staff. The people up there are wonderful and really support the program. I really liked Coach Bo (Pelini). I know he’s going to turn the program around in a hurry. The scheme up there really fits me. It was a good decision for me.”
Pelini, the defensive coordinator at LSU the past three seasons, landed another Louisiana commit over the weekend from wide receiver Khiry Cooper of Shreveport.
The Huskers now have 25 commitments with national signing day on Wednesday.
Cooper, an all-state selection who helped John Curtis Christian to a state championship, chose Nebraska over Arkansas, Southern Miss and Baylor.
He told the Times Picayune that Pelini was a big factor in his decision.
“I respect him highly. He’s a hell of a coach,” Smith said. “I spoke to some of his former players and they told me that as good of a coach as he is, that he’s an even better man. The tradition at Nebraska is so great, with the Blackshirts. The people of Nebraska want to get back to that winning tradition and play hard-nosed defense.”
