Starting Monday, trees will be removed from the median area between 9th and 10th streets east of Van Dorn Park to prepare for a spring traffic safety project.

Trees that have been previously damaged or are diseased also will be removed, city officials said Friday.worked closely with the city's parks and recreation department, which will replace the trees as part of an overall landscaping plan at the intersection.

The project includes the creation of two left-turn lanes for northbound traffic, new signals and a new sidewalk to improve pedestrian safety.

The project will improve public safety and traffic flow in the area, said Public Works Director Greg MacLean.  He said Public Works has

When completed, the area will be safer with less congestion while preserving the park's atmosphere, MacLean said.

Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Johnson said the trees were being removed now to prevent disruption of birds during nesting season.

More information about the project is available on the city's Web site (keyword: projects).

" With the savings on your property taxes, Mr. Maclean, I hope you pay for the tree removal your self. "

" To help improve traffic in the area of 9th and 10th on Van Dorn as well as traffic on Hwy 2 through out the city, Lincoln should redirect all semi trucks heading east and west through city onto Saltillo Rd. Trucks heading east will travel on Hwy 77 south to Saltillo Rd where they can link back up with Hwy 2 using 84th Street. Trucks heading west will do the opposite, take 84th to Saltillo Rd, Saltillo Rd to Hwy 77 and then north to the Interstate. From 84th street to Saltillo Rd, and Saltillo Rd to Hwy 77 there are no lights and the speed limit is 55mph. On Hwy 77 south of Van Dorn there are only four lights at Pioneers, Old Cheney, Warlick and Saltillo Rd. The detour may add 5-10 mins of travel time but for the residents of Lincoln who travel Hwy 2 there depature would be priceless. If and when the bypass opens semi trucks will have to travel that direction so lets do it now. This will also help tremendously with the traffic congestion at 9th and 10th on Van Dorn. The semi's are the problems because they want to cram themselves in the tiny one block area so they can beat the light. It wouldn't cost Lincoln to try this idea but it will cost Lincoln a lot of money to tear up this whole area because semi's are the major problem. If I'm wrong after six months then have at. How about it? "

" This would not be an issue if the by-pass were built. And will not help with the majority of the problem, big trucks.Again just a temporary fix. "

" Wow, I always thought that the area was one of the prettiest on the journey into Lincoln. Otherwise that whole area is the next blighted space, Lincoln has to offer. I would rather see a few trees then the landscaping that is all over town on our busy streets. "

" what you mean if the by pass would be built it is built just no one wants to take it because it is longer i like the new law of trucks only in the curb lane now its time to take it one step further and make it all trucks must take by pass "

what, what? wrote on January 21, 2008 2:02 pm:
" And what bypass would this be? The bypass m was referring to is the SOUTH BYPASS, which has not been built yet. The only bypass that has been built is the WEST BYPASS (i.e. Hwy 77/Van Dorn area). That is what the trucks are trying to get ONTO that is causing the congestion in this area (after coming into town on Hwy 2), or of course the opposite direction also. And, yes, the south bypass does need to be built, in about the Saltillo area...but urging traffic onto Saltillo is dangerously unsafe, as much of it is not paved east of about 60th St if I remember correctly. Plus, how would you like it if the two-lane road in front of your house was turned into the next truck route? "

ago, but no money to fix the roads we have, and the 2015

bunch of whinning little kids that jump from one thing to

citizens even with the highest taxes!!! "
