Leaders of 2015 Vision, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the city of Lincoln are set to announce a “major gift” Thursday that will help fund a new downtown ice arena that supporters hope will accommodate the city’s booming interest in ice-related sports.

The source of the multimillion dollar gift — someone with Lincoln roots — will be revealed during a ceremony at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Embassy Suites, 1040 P St.

In the meantime, ice enthusiasts say, you might want to start saving for a new pair of skates.

“(The new ice arena) means we can take ice sports to a whole different level than we’ve been able to in the past with the kind of facility we’re going to get,” said Mark Champion, assistant coach of the UNL men’s ice hockey team and part of a years-long grassroots effort to bring more ice to Lincoln.

“It’s going to be huge for the city of Lincoln.”

The arena will be near Haymarket Park as part of the “sports triangle” promoted by 2015 Vision. It’s slated to include two sheets of ice, offices, locker rooms and other state-of-the-art features.

When it opens — neither a timetable nor a cost for the project was available Wednesday — it will be open to the public.

“This is something that a 2-year-old all the way up to a 100-year-old can enjoy,” said Will Scott, principal at real estate development company WRK LLC and another longtime supporter of a new ice arena.

University, city and sports leaders long have clamored for the facility, saying it would ease pressure on the Ice Box at State Fair Park, home of the Lincoln Stars.

In addition to the Stars, the Ice Box hosts the UNL men’s and women’s ice hockey teams, UNL intramural teams and skating times for the university and city communities.

Because of the squeeze, the men’s team is forced to play home matches in Fremont, and the women’s team practices as early as 6 a.m. Broomball — by far UNL’s most popular intramural sport — often stretches until 2 a.m.

Making matters worse, the Ice Box is only open about eight months a year.

“I can’t believe that Lincoln doesn’t have a year-round sheet of ice,” Scott said.

The idea of adding a second arena gained steam about a year ago when 2015 Vision and the NU Foundation lent support, Scott said.

Now, with a donor’s help, it appears that idea will become a reality.

For Champion, a former hockey player himself, the arena is a long time coming.

“This is kind of the epitome for me,” he said. “It’s been a long, hard road.”

He and others have community interests in mind, too.

Tournaments hosted at the arena would bring big dollars to Lincoln, Scott said, as visiting families sleep at hotels, eat at restaurants and tour the Haymarket.

And he said special programs will be set up to allow under-privileged children to skate, too.

As for the Stars, their facility isn’t in any danger, even if UNL succeeds in its quest to acquire State Fair Park to convert the land into a research campus — a project also supported by 2015 Vision.

UNL’s concept plans for State Fair Park call for the Ice Box to stay where it is.

And Stars President Jim Pflug said he’d be on board for a new arena.

“I think that there’s definitely some benefits to having more ice available to the city,” Pflug said.

“There are times here when one sheet just is not sufficient to accommodate the demand. Our hope would be that if they’re moving forward with it, that would lead to more interest in ice-related sports and hockey and that would ultimately benefit us.”

" This is great news!! Lincoln's needed a new arena for so long... The Ice Box feels like home, but is certainly needing improvements. I'm so excited! "

" We are long time Stars hockey fans, and hearing that they could give a "gift of a new ice area" would be Sweeeet! Lincoln needs some more ideas for the young people out there! Keep the kids in sports and other activities and maybe they will stay off the streets being in trouble! The UNL Ice Sports should be thrilled! Hope it all works out!! "

" Don't get excited people, if UNL gets their way, the Ice Box will be a distant memory as it get bulldozed down for the "technology park". Then, Lincoln, you are down to one ice rink again. "

" A new ice skating rink is a great idea. How about we put it in the old K-Mart building on 56th and Hwy 2. Move a couple of support beams, put it in. Let's redevelop land around town rather than build anew. I say condemn the building, take it through eminent domain, and utilize it. Thompson Realty is sitting on a great tax write off over there, and will continue to do so because they're asking way too much for rent. The city should take back the land that is causing this city so much eye sore. "

" Great news. A second rink will really help UNL and the community. 12:30AM broomball games are not good for the GPA. I'd also be interested in exploring the lake street lake idea? Why isn't it filled? Insurance reasons? "

" I don't think most of you understand that this ice rink won't be for the stars, it is for the rest of the community to use and profit from. This is a good thing...when someone or a group donates money to provide an asset for the city to use and grow with, you have to respect that. STOP THE CRYING! At least we have a group that is trying to help bring about growth within our city. Sometimes you people amaze me! "

JoBeth wrote on December 19, 2007 5:58 pm:
" Yes, can anyone answer why Lake Street does not have a rink? Who will be responsible for maintance on the "new rink"? Taxpayers? I think the Kmart idea is wonderful. Use someplace already built! "

Worried wrote on December 19, 2007 6:12 pm:
" I wish I could be more excited about this announcement; Lincoln has needed a second ice rink since the Stars came to town. However, the way the 2015 group has operated, it really seems like there is motivation behind this announcemnt other than just goodwill to the city. If UNL and the 2015 group has their way, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Ice Box were torn down, which would just leave one rink again. Hopefully there will be more info tomorrow during this announcement, but I'm not holding my breath that it will be good news in the long term... "

The Real Terry wrote on December 19, 2007 8:13 pm:
" They're probably going to announce that they bought an NHL franchise to stimulate "economic development." But before the deal can go through, the taxpayers will have to buy land from one of the "group" and pay to build a multi-million dollar arena that will be "shared" with UNL. Of course, this will all be contingent on the legislature passing a bill to add 10 cents a pack on cigarettes to pay for it. "

Brad Ladd wrote on December 19, 2007 11:29 pm:
" Let us start figuring out what the bill will be. Donor to offer matching funds? City to underwrite bond? How many ways will the taxpayers be charged to fuel Perlman's legacy. I am sure that more concrete will be poured. "

" Someone with Lincoln roots my "A", it's from some U.N.L. fund and they're trying to take State fair park away one piece at a time, they'll probably get their way just like the new jail, no one cares what the people think, it's all about what the good ole boys want and what will make them money. Put it by Haymarket and make Jon camp's property more valuble. What a great idea Clown Vision had this time. "

" I heard the new rink will have 2 sheets, so anybody worried about loosing State Fair rink doesn't need to worry. This has been worked on for several year by a great number of people. No one individual can be credited with gettting it finally done. I think you might be able to look forward to a UNL women's Ice Hockey team in the future (not club). The best thing about it is it will creat more activities for Lincoln youth which the city has ignored for years. Almost everything built for rec use is primarily for adults. "

" Well, even if The Ice Box gets torn down, who cares? Its outdated and a bit trashy. As a player I hate the rink. The locker rooms are bad, the lighting is horrible, and it just doesn't seem to have much class. And as for others saying that if The Ice Box gets torn down, then Lincoln is down to one rink. Incorrect, even if it gets torn down Lincoln will still be in a better position then it was in before since this new venue will have two sheets of ice. "
