ATLANTA— If Bo Pelini’s not coming back to be the head football coach of Nebraska, he sure delivered an odd pre-game speech to his LSU team before Saturday’s SEC championship game.

According to LSU defenders Darry Beckwith and Kirston Pittman, Pelini told the team that coaching at Nebraska was his dream job.

“He said he’s leaning toward taking the job and that it’s his dream,” Beckwith said after LSU’s 21-14 win over Tennessee. “We understand that so we came out and played hard for him.”

Asked directly if he told the team he was leaving for Nebraska, Pittman said: “No, he didn’t say that. He did tell us it’s a dream job and the opportunity of a lifetime, and it’s something he’s never done before.”

Pelini declined interviews. After the game, the defensive coordinator was given a Gatorade shower by his players. He also received a  game ball from the team.

Pelini’s defense came up with two huge fourth-quarter interceptions, including one that was returned for the game-winning touchdown.

Pittman said he felt Pelini might share more with the team either after the game or tomorrow.

Though it was reported by various media outlets Friday night that Pelini was going to be the next Husker coach, Nebraska interim athletic director Tom Osborne would not comment on the reports.

Randy York,  associate athletic director for communications, said Saturday night that Osborne still had no comment on the situation.

Earlier on Saturday, a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors, akin to NU’s Board of Regents, told the Baton Rouge Advocate that Pelini going to Nebraska appeared to be a done deal.

Said Weems: “I think it’s pretty clear and it’s our idea that Bo will be the next coach at Nebraska.”
