The skateboarders can’t order hot beverages or attend concerts at Edge64 anymore, but they still have their skate park.

Back to the Bible closed the coffee house and concert hall inside the entertainment complex at 64th Street and Cornhusker Highway about two months ago for financial reasons, according to Tammy Weisert, vice president of media/communications.

“Basically it’s just like any other business ... you want to operate in the black at some point, but we just weren’t seeing it,” she said.

The skate park is still open 4-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4-10 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

The $1 million complex, with a 500-person capacity, opened in March 2006. It was under the nonprofit organization’s umbrella, but it operated separately and for profit.

When it started, Edge64 featured touring Christian bands each month.

The coffeehouse sold sandwiches, pizza and baked goods,  in addition to gourmet coffees and specialty drinks.

Edge64 discontinued its food service after a few months, and eventually began booking fewer and fewer concerts.

The last major event was in the spring.

Back to the Bible has no plans for the complex, Weisert said, adding it’s still being used.

“It’s just not open for public use,” she said.

" Not that a religious right organization like this would ever do such a thing, but why don't they try to sell it to someone who could turn it into a complex similar to the NODO entertainment complex that Saddle Creek Records opened up this year in Omaha. Lincoln is sorely lacking a small auditorium/large club venue for shows, the kind that draw alot of college students and feature indie bands "

" Good riddance. We don't need any more christian right outfits corrupting a subculture known for its independent thinking (i.e. skaters) and rebellious nature with lies, superstition, and religious dogma. "

" It's funny that a religious organization has to lure kids in with "cool" stuff like concerts and a skate park. Perhaps they need to realize that more and more people are not sold on believing in the whole religion thing anymore and using gimicks in an attept to promote god just doesn't work. "

" It's a shame that it closed down. i'm sure some of those people out there may be surprised to hear that there are some very good Christian bands. By the way... Music is NOT a gimic. It's funny how people automatically assume that its a "ploy" used by a religous people to "lure" others in. It's a genre of music. At least they were trying to do something to give kids other things to do in this town. Sad that there is a negative light cast on this whole situtation by some readers. "

Jon wrote on November 29, 2007 10:37 pm:
" Its sad, but this is what the contemporary churches have done, everybody has to build a big sports arena. All in the name of bringing in the younger people. My opinion, its wrong. Its driving the ones they are trying to reach to worship sports. Think Lincoln has enough of that. Jesus said, "preach the gospel" He didn't say pay ball. The is a day of reconging and we all will have to answer, the Bible says, "Choose who you will serve, man or God." Make the wrong choice, blaspheme God and you will pay ' the price. YOU have the choice!!! "

" They might have an actual crowd turn out for shows if they weren't so adamant about only booking "wholesome" bands. Since when has live music been wholesome? "

" And just think how much money went into building this place and how much GOOD could have been done in this community for people in need with that amount of money. If only these churches would quit spending some much money on buildings and actually do something for the poor for a change... "

" How are we as beleivers to expand Gods kingdom, When God puts a perfect avenue for us to reach all demographs of people in Lincoln and surrounding areas with a beautiful establishment(edge64)and then close it down because it is in the black. Sounds like B2B did not pray enough for this establishment to become succesful. Back 2 the bible needs to rethink what has been done and what they can do to make it succesful. Please put your faith in Christ, through him all things are done. "

" Such negative attitudes and comments from all the people who dont have a clue as to what Back to the Bible was trying to do. Skaters alot of times are treated like rejects in society, so the skate park was created to be a safe and fun place for kids to go skate. That way they aren't on the streets, sidewalks, and parking lots where everyone yells at them. It is a place where parents can drop their kids off, and know that they are being supervised, and are safe. "

Alternative Activities wrote on November 30, 2007 7:59 am:
" Not that my opinion matters, but thank you Journal Star for allowing me to think it does. As I think about what Jesus was into when He was on earth, my assumption is that he would have been down with Edge64. He was into all kinds of alternative activities: Hiking (mountains/wilderness), water sports (boating/walking on water), Ultimate Fighting Champion (clearing the temple), and so on. We'll you get the point. There is nothing wrong or manipulative about a youth activity club that focuses on honoring God with the activities you are into. Maybe the coffee was just bad... "

Not a coffeehouse wrote on November 30, 2007 8:04 am:
" They tried to do too much. A real coffeehouse is a place that is quiet and inviting and confines it's menu to pastries, coffee and coffee drinks, and good teas. (Visit the Mill or come to The Blue Bottle in downtown Fremont if you want to know what a coffeehouse is)Selling pizza and attaching a skate park turned into something else--so they were never going to get a coffee crowd. And I agree that the church should be the church--not an amusement park. "

Christian music wrote on November 30, 2007 8:34 am:
" is not a genre. It's "christian" words set to what ever type of music is popular. Did they serve nottacino for coffee? And you'll find people "high" on their newly found christian experience come off that high real fast! "

ALW wrote on November 30, 2007 10:49 am:
" It's comments like B's that show just how ignorant non-church goers are. So the buildings are big--so are the congregations. If you'd ever contact a church about their programs I'm sure you'd be surprised to see how much good is done throughout the community. The church I attend in Lincoln participates in the Angel Tree project providing Christmas presents for children of incarcerated parents, food donations for the food bank, blood donations when the blood mobile visits, there are people traveling to Tanzania. We have volunteers to drive people from downtown Lincoln to the mission and back during the overpass construction. The list goes on and on. It's obvious you have no idea what you are talking about. Try consulting with someone who does before passing judgement. "

" Don't book christian bands!!! Wow that was a hard fix. Do they seriously wonder why this happened? These people are all for helping people change their ways, but when it comes down to it they themselves would never change their ways to help others. Kids go there to be safe, but since Back to the Bible isn't willing to change these kids will soon have no place to go. If they truly cared they would make some adjustments and still keep the place "wholesome", but something tells me God doesn't want them to. "

" Come check out the skate park before passing judgement. We skaters never feel like someone is pushing Christianity on us, they let us come and just skate. So what, if the park is owned by Christians, they offer a weekly Bible study off site that kids can come to if they choose, and a lot of kids do! A safe, drug free, indoor, accepting place for us to enjoy our sport. And you want to punish them for doing so much good for our community. Whatever dude! "

burnt at the coffee shop wrote on November 30, 2007 1:36 pm:
" I worked in the B2B office building with another company. when they opened the coffee shop, I was pleased to have something so near by to grab a quick lunch. I was very upset when our office recieved a memo asking thier "extended family" to help them out by not eating there from 11-1 and when we did come in that we would have to wait to be served when customers were there. to be fair, they asked us to do this because they were short staffed & unprepared. Unfortunatly this request upset me and some of my co-workers very much. Because of that additude, I chose not to patronize the establishment and when asked about it by friends ect, I did not reccomend it to them based on that treatment. Sad to say that small things like this can really damage a resturaunt's business, no matter how positive they try to project it. Sadly it reinforsed my opinion those who brag about thier "christianess." "

" My question is, why does it take "FUN FOR ME" to reach the younger generation. True, a good portion REFUSE to listen to the word of God or open a Bible. When I was young, I loved to go to Sunday School and study the Bible, (not crafts and games) and every Sunday Always set in church with the rest of the youth and intently listened to the sermons and applied them to my life. It is true, too many sermons are liberal, as one big church in Lincoln I go to, the sermon is always all about the preacher and jokes and making himself funny, and amazing the congregation eats that up and laughs. I don't call that worshipping God or learning from God's word. Theres a ton of ministers now days in all the churches preaching like that. Most churches these days send the younger children to a room for crafts & fun when it comes time for the sermon. If they are smart enough to run a computer I think they might get something out of a sermon if the parents weren't so concerned that they were not having FUN! Thank heavens I was taught why you go to church. Some of these comments shock me. I have a friend who told me her son went to the church I belonged to in another city where I lived, and I asked why she didn't go. Oh she said, "he doesn't go to church he just goes to play baseball with the youth." Well track his life to adulthood, been married 6 times, has your kids, my kids and our kids. And then when his kids became adults they had kids out of wedlock by 2 or 3 different gals. This is all to common. It goes back to me, me, me and all about me and my fun in life. "

" Large new building, fewer entertainment bookings, losses and finally closing. Can you say Pershing or new arena? "

Patrick wrote on December 1, 2007 12:25 pm:
" I laugh at how "Lesson" attempts to compare a small venue ran by folks who aren't quite savvy enough to run a business like this to Pershing or a new arena. They are apples and orange. The only venues even remotely similar to this in Lincoln would be the State and Rococo Theatres, and they're not even GA venues. The Waiting Room and Slowdown in Omaha are the type of venue that this place should attempt to be, if it is ever sold to a secular/non-religious entity. I just don't see them selling it or the city backing an investment group the way Omaha backed Saddle Creek Records development of the Slowdown in the North Dodge area. "

" What is wrong with some of you critics? Can't you celebrate a safe place for young people to be enjoying a hobby. Oh how horrible that they aren't doing drugs or other harmful things. If they were entertaining them selves in a harmful way some of you would support this. The only thing you dislike about this is that it's "Christian". Which one of us is closed minded and shallow in their thinking. Guillermo is the individual who doesn't seem to want to allow others to think for themselves and be exposed to different views .Skaters can't be Christians is a closed minded view . And Jon where in the bible does it say that skateboarding is wrong? Where did Jesus go to meet the Samaritan woman? To the well and he stayed there for three days not condemning her but showing her and others the love of God. What about Christ's interactions with tax collectors and prostitutes. The biggest sin of most right wing Christians today is pride. It is sad this wonderful outreach has been shut down. Christ can change the world. There are no atheists in fox holes. "

" I am not surprised at all. I once went there just to sit down and meditate on the Word for a while (it was a Saturday evening). But, alas, I was told that only people there to see the concerts would be allowed in, and that I'd have to pay a COVER CHARGE to see them. No thank you....I can download REAL old time Gospel anytime I please. This "Contemporary Christian Music" can't hold a candle to that old time Gospel music anyway. Maybe Edge64 shutting down isn't so bad after all. "
