Lincoln diver Lilly Hinrichs will be taking more than her gold medal home from the Junior Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Irving Middle School student, who won the 12-13-year-old platform division gold medal Saturday, will also take home the knowledge of dive names in Portuguese, French and Spanish.

It was her first international competition.

“”It’s really cool when we’re on the board getting ready to dive because they announce everyone in their own language,” Hinrichs said. “For Canada, they announce the dives in French, for Brazil it’s Portuguese, and for a lot of other countries it’s Spanish. For us, it’s English. It’s really cool.

“I’ve learned a lot of new languages.”

Hinrichs, who finished with 275.00 points, beat out U.S. teammate Annika Lenz of Altadena, Calif. (258.75).

“I didn’t know I had won at first, but then I looked at my coach (Kris Hoffman) and I figured it out,” Hinrichs said. “The best part was that my teammate got second.”

Earlier in the week, Hinrichs finished fifth on the one-meter springboard with 237.55 points.
