Nebraska running backs coach Randy Jordan was born and raised in Manson, N.C., about 125 miles from Winston-Salem, where Nebraska plays Wake Forest on Saturday.

How would Jordan describe his hometown?

“Small,” Jordan said. “Mayberry town. Everybody knows everybody.

“I’m excited to get back. I’m an East Coast guy. I love the Midwest, but I’m an East Coast guy and I’ve got a lot of friends in that area.”

Jordan grew up on a farm and said he found his own entertainment as a kid. He recalled going to the “garbage heap” when he was small, picking up big lug nuts and tying a tobacco string around them.

“I used to spin it and throw it, then I’d go get it, then I’d spin it and throw it, and did that. ... I didn’t have a lot to do,” Jordan said. “But we found things to do. So it was fun.”

Jordan nearly played at Wake Forest. He orally committed to the Demon Deacons out of high school before new North Carolina coach Mack Brown called one day.

“I said, ‘Let me talk to some folks about it,’ and the next thing I know,” Jordan said, “I decommitted from Wake Forest and went to Carolina.”

Jordan rushed for 1,131 yards and nine touchdowns in his Tar Heel career.
