Sarah Pavan was honored Monday as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. The Nebraska volleyball star joins a list of previous Honda-Broderick Cup winners headlined by the likes of Mia Hamm and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

“Growing up, I watched Mia Hamm and Rebecca Lobo and to be grouped with them is amazing,” said Pavan, one of five finalists for this year’s award.

“These are huge names in women’s athletics, and I’m humbled to be in the same category,” she added. “I always work extremely hard, but my coaches and my teammates have also helped make me the best I can be. This is a great award for me, for the school and for the sport of volleyball.”

The award, presented at the Low Library at Columbia University in New York City, not only recognizes outstanding athletic achievement but team contributions, scholastics and community involvement as well.

Pavan, a 4.0 student, was previously honored as the national player of the year and academic All-American of the year in volleyball.

She helped lead the Huskers to the 2006 national championship.
