Police say whoever broke into Lakeview Elementary School overnight Monday took off with a digital camera and caused about $1,000 damage.

Capt. Jim Thoms said a custodian at the school at 300 Capitol Beach Blvd. contacted the police Tuesday after he discovered someone had gotten into the school and pried open doors to offices. Thoms said police believe the burglar got in through an unlocked window on the south side of the school and used a pry tool to get into locked offices.

He said the burglar found some petty cash, took quarters from a candy machine and stole a Canon digital camera. The total loss was estimated at $224.

To get it, the burglar did about $1,000 damage to doors and vending machines, Thoms said.

Cass County deputies investigate vandalism

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating 15 reports of mailbox vandalism at Beaver Lake this week.

Sheriff William Brueggemann said deputies responded Monday to Beaver Lake in reference to a group of people damaging mailboxes in the area, but they weren’t able to find the suspects.

On Tuesday, deputies began investigating the reports of mailbox vandalism along Beaver Lake Boulevard, Monroe Road, Monroe Court, York Court, Verdon Circle and 12th Avenue.

Deputies also are investigating a report of vandalism and theft at the golf course and vandalism to a construction site on Murray Road. The incidents appear to be related, and deputies are looking into leads.

Brueggemann asked anyone with information to contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at 296-9370 or Crimestoppers at 800-527-3699.

" Does anyone else get tired of these punks breaking into schools? We need alarm systems or something. Any why was a window left UNLOCKED? duh "

" I sure hope all these new $100 million dollar schools (cough, cough) that are getting built will have alarm systems in them!? If not, then it is just par for the course. Just more of MY wasted money from this taxpayer with no kids. "

" LPS needs to get some surveillance cameras in all the schools as soon as possible. "

" It would seem that the couple of thousands of dollars it might cost to install security cameras at each school would be well spent. How many more schools need to be vandalized before LPS gets proactive? "

" Avg Taxpayer --> Lakeview is not a $100 million school. It is one of the smallest (if not they smallest) elementary LPS has. They have a very dedicated staff and covey of parents that make it a success. And I'm certain an alarm system installed in any school - where teachers come and go to work on lesson plans, grade papers, etc. on days off, and a host of community events are held daily (including YMCA intramural sports) — would be nothing short of a total failure and something that would hinder police response more than it would help. "

" I believe we need to adopt some biblical punishments, get caught doing something like this lose a hand. The risk/reward ratio seems to be in these punks favor and not in the favor of the hard working law abiding normal citizen "
