Nebraska apparently has set itself up to have good quarterback competition for years to come.

The Huskers on Tuesday night received a verbal commitment from high-profile quarterback recruit Blaine Gabbert of Parkway West High in Ballwin, Mo.

Gabbert, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior-to-be at Parkway, chose Nebraska over Alabama and Missouri. He also received scholarship offers from Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State and Minnesota, among others.

“I just had a gut feeling Nebraska was the best place for me and would provide a chance to win a national championship,” Gabbert said.

Nebraska’s current quarterback roster has senior Sam Keller, juniors Joe Ganz and Beau Davis, sophomore Zac Lee and true freshman Patrick Witt.

Gabbert, who has run the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds, drew a four-star rating from Scout.com. He becomes the seventh high school player to pledge to Nebraska’s class of 2008, including six on offense. Four of those players are high-profile offensive linemen.

Last season Gabbert threw for 1,523 yards and 20 touchdowns while running for 458 yards and nine scores.
