An 'extreme' open house
BY KATHRYN CATES MOORE/Lincoln Journal Star
Lincoln can finally get a close-up look at our hometown Extreme Makeover house.
Next Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Teresa Fullerton and her husband, Ken Machacek will open the doors to their house at 6825 Platte Ave., which has starred in its own television show.
Last fall, ABC’s Extreme Makeover television show came to town, and with the help of hundreds of volunteers and donations, the Extreme Makeover team took down the small Havelock home and replaced it with a 4,000 square-foot home, new from top to bottom.
The show aired in January and the Fullerton/Machacek family got back to everyday living.
They had planned this open house from the beginning, and the $5 admission will benefit the People’s City Mission.
The whole house will be open, Fullerton said.
The “heart” of the home is the kitchen/family room where the five children gather. The basement, with its hockey and race-car-themed rooms, are where the boys and their friends hangout.
And the backyard, which hasn’t gotten much use this winter, is all set for family gatherings.
It features a covered outdoor seating area with fireplace in one area, another fire pit with a seating wall in another and a rushing water fall.
Visitors be careful: A family of robins has taken up residence in the baker’s rack near the outdoor fireplace, but the tour will be routed around them, Fullerton said.
