Rep. Adrian Smith is conspicuously absent from a long list of hosts for a fund-raising reception for Sen. Chuck Hagel later this month.

The list of more than 100 hosts for the $100-per-person event in Omaha sponsored by Hagel for Senate includes Reps. Jeff Fortenberry and Lee Terry, Nebraska’s other two Republican congressmen.

Attorney General Jon Bruning recently announced he may challenge Hagel in the 2008 Republican primary election if the senator seeks re-election to a third term.

“Both gentlemen are friends of mine,” Smith said Monday by telephone from Washington.

“It’s a hypothetical matchup and I’m not getting too excited about hypothetical matchups at this point.”

Smith won election to western and central Nebraska’s 3rd District House seat last November.

Asked for his reaction, Hagel political director Kevin Chapman said: “We are thrilled with the response we’ve gotten on this event. It shows the broad base of support Senator Hagel has in Nebraska.”

Missing from the list of Republican state officeholders serving as hosts was State Treasurer Shane Osborn.

Gov. Dave Heineman, Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, Secretary of State John Gale and State Auditor Mike Foley will co-host the event.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky will headline the May 18 reception at the Paxton ballroom in downtown Omaha.

Following that reception, McConnell will join Hagel at a $1,000-per-person fund-raising dinner at the Happy Hollow Country Club.  Contributors will be asked to consider the $4,600 federal maximum donation to Hagel for Senate.

" I'm not sure not having Rep. Smith absent from Hagel's event is a liability. "

" As long as Adrian stays as far away from Hagel as he can, Adrian will always have my support. Too bad Heineman won't do the same thing. As long as Hagel is waving the white flag and talking about impeachment, no Nebraska citizen, Republican or Democrat should have anything to do with him. "

" Why should anyone be surprised that some of the party faithful are skipping? Hagel stopped being a Republican years ago. He now just wonders around being a ne'er do well presidential candidate. "

" GO REP. SMITH!! It appears Hagel is calling in the IOU from his lap-dog Gov Heineman! We knew there would be a pay back for Hagel loaning Heineman 'free' staff members and solicting large contributions to Heineman's funds during the recent governor's race. Again, the political twins Hagel-Heineman are trying to split the Nebraska Republican faithful; and we aren't even sure if Hagel can still spell Republican. Perhaps we TRUE Nebraskans will get lucky of 'on the fence' Hegal will run as a independent for President, and we'll finally be rid of him. Again, GO REP. SMITH! "

" I find it more interesting and newsworthy that Hal Daub and John Y. McCollister weren't on the host list either. "

" Interesting. I have a feeling however that the lefties in the Neb. Dem. Party are praying for a contest that will never happen. Smith is smart to stay out of the peeing match. "

" Wow give a republican a mind of his own and let him speak out on what his beliefs are and watch the gloves come off. It is about time we have a Republican Rep that has his own mind and doesn't follow blindly. GO Sen HAGEL ! "
