After getting about four hours of sleep Tuesday night, Lincoln’s mayor-elect Chris Beutler was up early Wednesday doing a radio interview by 7 a.m.

Several interviews followed and by 10:45 a.m., that perfectly coiffed campaign hair was tousled, and he was mildly irritated when his campaign manager handed him a jam-packed daily schedule.

There was little time to think about the fact that about 12 hours prior, he’d been elected mayor.

“It’s kind of like out of the frying pan, into the fire,” Beutler said.

The realization did hit though.

“It’s such an odd thought to walk outside and look around and think, ‘Oh, my God. I’m responsible for all this,’ ” Beutler said Wednesday morning.

It’s overwhelming and humbling all at once, he said.

His campaign office was still buzzing with staffers Wednesday, but the sign on the wall no longer counted the number of days until the election. Instead, it said, “12 days” until Beutler is sworn in as mayor.

During the dozen days before he takes office, Beutler said he would seek the advice of past mayors, CEOs and Mayor Coleen Seng. Even though he was tough on Seng during the campaign, he said, “She’s been wonderful. She’s able to separate ideas and understand what we needed to do.”

Beutler’s immediate next steps will be to:

* Form a transition team. On Wednesday he named W. Don Nelson chairman of the transition team. Nelson recently retired from his job as U.S. Senator Ben Nelson’s state director and has served as advisor to several Nebraska governors and senators.

* Get a list of the job appointments the mayor makes.

*  Talk to Seng’s cabinet directors so he can start making personnel decisions.

* Get updated on the status of key city projects, such as building a new arena and 2015 Vision projects, so the city can get moving on them quickly.

During the campaign, Beutler said he didn’t spend much time analyzing which cabinet directors would stay or go, since it would have been “presumptuous and potentially a great waste of time.”

Now he intends to begin meeting with the directors to help him decide whether and what changes may need to be made in their ranks.

He said he’ll be keenly interested in whether they’ve been “agents of change” or not.

Asked if any will be dismissed immediately after he takes office, Beutler said, “Everything is within the realm of possibility.”

While some changes to the cabinet could be made immediately, other directors’ futures will be evaluated over the course of his first year, he said. Sort of like being a probationary employee.

Once Beutler takes office, his priorities will be tackling the street financing gap and city budget, analyzing the three departments that deal with businesses and getting 2015 Vision projects, such as the arena, moving.

In his victory speech, Beutler said he was “declaring an end to negativity.” How will he do that? By not letting the issues of the day become personal and partisan, he said.

There’s a difference between having an honest disagreement and being an obstructionist for partisan reasons.

While the Legislature isn’t as partisan as City Hall, Beutler said he thinks negativity goes in cycles and, “Hopefully we can drive it to the positive side.”

He also had a message for city employees: He said he’ll support them and give them the resources and leadership they need to get their jobs done, but he’ll also hold them accountable.

“Together we will get the job done and restore faith in our city government,” he said.

" My advice to the new mayor is taking a look at the speed limits in this town and increasing some of them...inconsistent and rediculously slow limits on some roads cause problems for both motorists and police attempting to enforce them. "

" Hey look at that, he's already looking to make a bigger government. A new transition committee? Are you kidding me? What a waste of money. "

" Addressing speed limits and intersection sensors could help make motorists become more efficient. Not a bad idea considering gas could see $4/galloon over the next couple of years. On a side note, regardless of political party, it nice to hear about someone running a positive campaign. Perhaps this is a sign of change for the future of politics in general. I'm skeptical, but there's always hope. "

" Yeah, some transition. More of the same old, same old. With a good ol boy slap on the back we're off to the non-races. "

" As a former Lincolnite, born and raised, I would like to congratulate Mayor Beutler. His background in state government will prove quite beneficial to the city in getting state funds and favorable legislation. I hope to return soon to live in Nebraska. When I do, I hope I won't continue to hear all the sophomorish, partisan negativity that has been coming from the Lincoln City Council. Again, Congratulations Mr. Mayor. "

" the best advice to the new mayor is to NOT hire his campaign manager. he is a good politician (that is not a compliment by the way), which is not the type of person for serving the people...it is good for winning an election, and for making decisions based on staying elected...nothing else! "

" Congratulations Mayor Beutler and congratulations to the voters of Lincoln for electing a brilliant, capable, honest and committed individual to lead you. As a former Lincoln resident with friends and relatives still living in the city, and as a UNL alum and former intern in State Sen. Beutler's office over 20 years ago, I was quite pleased to hear about the election results. You couldn't have chosen a finer person for this very important office. "

" If Swoboda would have been elected, then, I'd agree we're in for more of the same old, same old. Swoboda was part of the problem and would have brought the same into the mayors office. At least now we have someone who hasn't been part of city government running the show. "

" Congrats Mayor Elect Beutler! A probationary period for your current directors, that sounds readonable. Please, please, pleas divest yourself of the current mayor's chief of staff. We want and we need a mayor who thinks for himself and who is not umbilical corded to the last two administrations. "

" Jeepers, never heard of so much kiddie suggestions. And as for a positive campaign, I'll disagree. The call I got first thing out of the guys mouth was what a liar Sovboda was and on with more and I just hung up. I saw negative stuff on TV also. I'm sure the employment will increase along with the taxes. These days the guys with the big bucks don't work, they just deligate! Thats all they are capable of. After all he's use to working 25 hr work weeks, somebody has to do the job.Hope that guy thats moving back loves to pay the near highest taxes in the nation and double the consumer goods. He'll love that extra tax on Nebraska's cheap gasoline!!!!!!! "

" Now we will show you what a democrat can do when in power. This city will be lifted to a higher new level. Good bye and good riddance to Colleen Seng. I love it when a plan comes together. "

" Coleen Seng is a Democrat. She's been in power for four years, and driven Lincoln into the ground. The Democrats and Republicans are interested in the Democrats and Republicans, not the people. Stop pinning your hopes on Political Parties. They don't care one whit about you and me. "

" What do yo mean "Now we will show you what a democrat can do when in power" We have had Democratic mayors since 1999 (Wesely, Seng). If you were so unhappy with the previous administrations maybe you should have voted for Svoboda. We are destined for another 4 years of the same old stuff. "
