Injured man jumped from pickup for his hat
By the Lincoln Journal Star
A Lincoln man was in serious condition at BryanLGH Medical Center West after he jumped from the bed of a moving pickup truck Saturday afternoon at 19th Street and Center Park Road.
Garrick Cockle, 43, was sitting on the tailgate when his hat blew off. Lincoln Police Capt. Genelle Moore said Cockle then jumped from the truck, which was moving between 15 and 20 mph. He fell backwards after his feet hit the ground, causing head injuries.
Cockle appeared to be doing “OK,” Moore said later, and his injuries were not going to be life-threatening.
The driver of the 2004 Dodge Ram, 31-year-old Joshua Hays of 635 S. 42nd Street, was cited on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Moore said it was not clear whether Cockle had been drinking as well. He was not cited by police.
Animal control worker assaulted while on duty
A 35-year-old animal control worker was punched in the neck Friday evening after the owner of a pair of dogs refused to sign discharge papers and agree to a fee.
The animal control worker was called out to pick up two dogs running at large, and was approached by a woman while he was loading the dogs into his vehicle. She said the dogs were hers.
Then, 21-year-old Victor Gonzales, who lived at the same residence as the woman, showed up and “became verbal” with the worker, after Gonzales was told he needed to sign papers and agree to a fee before he could have the dogs back, Lincoln Police Capt. Genelle Moore said.
Gonzales then allegedly began throwing sticks and a bottle at the worker and his car. Then, police say, he punched the worker in the neck and ran away.
Police had not yet found Gonzales at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The animal control worker suffered from minor injuries, but was not hospitalized.
Stolen truck damaged, driven into Pawnee Lake
A 2001 Dodge Ram pickup was driven into Pawnee Lake sometime Saturday morning, after it was stolen from in front of a house near the 200 block of West Lakeshore Drive.
Lincoln Police Capt. Genelle Moore said the truck was found by a deputy of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office just after 10 a.m. Saturday.
The person responsible for the truck, which is owned by Lincoln Concrete, told police it may have been unlocked and the keys may have been inside.
Police reports indicate there were keys to the truck found at the lake.
The truck was a total loss, according to those reports. Moore said it appeared the vehicle was involved in an accident before it was driven into the lake, but did not know where or how the accident occurred.
Damage to the truck was estimated at $15,000.
