Letters, 4/19: Lend a helping hand

Thursday, Apr 19, 2007 - 12:18:16 am CDT

A few weeks ago, my faith in my fellow human  beings (at least my fellow Nebraskans) was renewed. Nebraskans are truly something. We are all they say and more.

On March 30 at 8:20 (think rush hour traffic), I witnessed an amazing event. I was at a service station getting gas when a Mountain Dew delivery truck lost several cases of pop off the back of his truck. They were scattered all across Ninth and Q streets. In many places, people may have just chuckled to themselves and kept in their own business, but not here — not in Nebraska. There were at least 10 people who stopped, ran a block down the street even, just to help this guy out. There were businessmen and women, my service station guy and even a couple of Department of Roads guys who came to his aid. The Department of Roads guys even parked their truck to deter traffic. It was such a cool sight to see, I was almost moved to tears, seriously.

I want to applaud those Nebraskans for doing the “right thing”;  the kind, compassionate thing. Perhaps if the whole world just focused a little more of their energy on doing the “right thing,” maybe our children would be growing up in a truly kinder, gentler nation.

So, when you are out in the world today, look for an opportunity to help your fellow neighbor — you never know when the shoe may be on the other foot, and it might be you who is in need of a helping hand.

Justice — or ‘just us?’

How fortunate those Duke players are that they did not have to spend years in jail until DNA evidence proved them innocent. Sometimes “justice” really does mean “just us.”

Resigned on LPS costs

Not all of the public is silent due to the two reasons cited by Keith Prettyman — disinterest or contentment (LJS, April 11). Some of us are silent out of resignation. I for one already feel defeated. Lincoln Public Schools is going to cost us more money every year. That is as sure as the proverbial death and taxes guarantee.

I have three children in LPS, so I personally see mismanagement of money. I think the single biggest waste of money is too many administrative staff members. LPS doesn’t have to worry about its budget. It knows it can forcibly take as much money from the taxpayers as it wants … one way or another. Why then would I waste my time coming to a meeting knowing that LPS could really care less if the public approves of its budget or not?

We spent $394,000 on supplies like pencils and paper. When I went to school, we brought our own. Can we go back to that? I think if parents around the city had a choice, we could buy those supplies for less than that amount. We would certainly be more cognizant of how many supplies our own children were using.

Marcy Bartek, Lincoln

Republicans: Please vote

Get out and vote. In the last mayoral election, Republican voters did not turn out like should have, consequently an inept Democrat was elected as mayor.

We need a change in our city government, and that does not mean elect Beutler, a career politician, as mayor. He wants to use the mayor’s office as a stepping stone for a higher office. He has fed at the public trough long enough. Beutler’s campaign people try to make the things he has done sound like such a great accomplishment, but they really are not.

Svoboda has been involved in city government just long enough to know what needs to be done to get this great city progressing like it should; let’s get out and elect him.

Jim Lee Butler, Lincoln

Why not investigate?

In response to Kelley J. Hascall’s letter (“Just the news, please,” April 10), I would like to suggest that a really good journalist is able to see a story from a variety of perspectives. This story was not about Hollywood gossip; rather, it used a popular celebrity figure to plant a seed of knowledge about adopting pets from animal shelters.

Articles like the one about Ebony encourage people who are considering adding a pet to the family to think about adopting one from a shelter rather than purchasing one from a pet store. Pet stores sometimes get their dogs from “puppy mills,” breeding facilities that subject dogs to cruel and harsh conditions that result in a lifetime of suffering and pain. I am a part of a large circle of animal advocates, and without exception, everyone who has seen the article applauds the Journal Star for placing “front page importance” on this subject.

I was moved by the passion in the words written by Hascall in her letter to the editor. She described herself as an idealist and expressed great enthusiasm for quality investigative reporting. I would encourage her to do some investigative reporting on puppy mills. Good reporting will lead to heightened awareness among the general public and hopefully to better laws that ensure “the good life” for our animal friends in Nebraska.

Phone books wasteful

I’m glad you addressed the problem of unwanted, unnecessary phone books that glut doorways. When I get another useless phone book, I think of the thousands of trees that are being destroyed. Now I know the approximate number — 26,282 trees. I immediately recycle the new unwanted phone books at a recycling center, but many people don’t and throw books in the trash, causing more landfill refuse.

No doubt the salespeople who sell ads in books 2, 3 and 4 tell would-be advertisers that people “need” their books with ads. Do advertisers realize that hundreds of these books end up piled at churches, vacant lots and unoccupied dwellings? Someone is paid to “deliver” the books wherever.

As for city maps in phone books, the map size has been reduced to the point the maps can’t be read even with a magnifying glass. Just try to search out an unfamiliar street using the worthless maps.

The cost of paper products is obviously going up. Would you rather valuable paper be used for umpteen phone books or toilet paper? Um …

" Good work, Mary Ann ... and the maps in the Alltel phone book aren't even accurate. Many, many streets have been completely omitted from the listings (though they are on the map if you have a mondo-magnifier to find them). Maybe next year they will break down and put in more maps so they are larger (thus easier to use) and even more importantly ... ACCURATE. "

" I can just see Swoboda run the city like he does his company. Signs a contract with the city do something by date certain and, 3 years later, it still isn't done. Also, complain about some company getting penalties waived for failure on a contract and yet he gets penalties waived on his failures. Sounds like he learned to run his business from being on the city council. Promise the moon and not follow through. I for one, will not vote for "Do Nothing Ken". "

" I was a 4 hour custodian at night at one of the middle schools. There were 2 other 8-hour custodians. I had 1 ½ to 2 hours worth of work but got paid for 4. I wasn’t supposed to leave early but always did because the other 2 would always be gone for at least 2 hours for their dinner break or they’d take turns sleeping in the nurses office. I subbed at another school where the custodians would take turns bringing movies to watch after the teachers left at night. Their were always too many custodians with not enough to do. "

" Considering Lincoln ended busing years ago, why then do we see school busses all over town every school day? Did we either end it or not? LPS is wasteful and an entity, and when you look at administration, you find some of the biggest waste of tax dollars out there. "

" I agree with Marcy Bartek. LPS not only is dragging the taxpayers thru the mud with spending, but look what is being taught to the kids. Yes, the parents should buy their own supplies! My parents did. It is obvious that the kids have little responsibility for taking care of their pencils etc, and its the same in an office, employees leave pens, pencils everywhere and, take them home by the gobs. This is the problem today with kids, everything is free for the taking all you want. Also there are too many highly paid staff that, like the state and city government, are unnecessary. As a CPA, there is mismanagement, the reason taxes are completely out of control. You tell me why Lincolns property taxes are 5th highest, when other bigger cities taxes are half. Really makes you wonder what these kids are being taught! "

come on! wrote on April 19, 2007 9:30 am:
" Every time someone writes in to bash LPS, I read with anger and disgust, mostly due to their ignorance! LPS cannot ask parents to buy school supplies for their children. There is a state law that mandates a "free" and appropriate public education. Schools cannot ask parents to send those things. Some districts do, but they're not supposed to. And about buses...federal law requires busing services for those students identified with disabilities and those students participating in ELL education. The federal government requires the busing, and provides some-not all-money for this service. Please get the facts before bashing others. Your ignorance is getting old! "

" Oh no, I hope those poor state workers don't lose their jobs for being good citizens. Why those few minutes that they stopped to help out could have cost the state about $50., and they will have to be fired. I, personnally applaud them for helping, and everyone else too. Thank you. It is because of Nebraskans like these that Nebraska came in second in the U.S. in volunteerism. Sometimes we actually see the good life. "

" Susan do the people from DOR realize they could have lost their jobs over this? I have witnessed acts of kindness myself. It isn't confined to nebraska. You will probably find if you ask they people who helped that they actually were raised in small towns like raymond and not the city. The "good life" is only in the eye of the beholder "

Brian in Lincoln wrote on April 19, 2007 10:54 am:
" Come on, I lived in NW Lincoln the last 7 years in Olympic Heights. Every day the busses came and went, then the busses for the handicap came as well. So yes, bussing is going on in Lincoln, even though it ended years ago. It is not my responsibility to pay for these kids to get to schoool so mom and dad have it easier and can sleep in. I also see busses going all over town picking up "regular" students, sorry to burst your bubble on that one. LPS is a wasteful, pork-fat fed machine that can only take...what it gives back, that can be debated as well. You would think that making cadillac payments to the beast, you would at least get a chevy in return, not a pinto. "

Lurker wrote on April 19, 2007 10:57 am:
" Marcy hit the nail on the head, not only in Lincoln, but in most of the state. The only way anyone is going to see any property tax relief in this state is to cut the waste in the education system, starting with the State Dept. of Ed. That monstrosity should be abolished, and replaced with a State Superintendant who would answer to the Governor and Legislature. Second, get rid of the countless layers of administration in each school district, and replace them with a County Superintendant. Break up all the mega-districts into small local districts where the local tax payers are more involved and in control of what goes on and what is spent. All of this, of course, goes against the ongoing agenda of removing all local control of schools and giving it to the administrators, State Ed Commissioner, and the teachers union. "

" LPS never did eliminate busing altogether. You have to live a certain distance from your school before your considered for busing. As for property taxes, Lincoln property taxes ranks in the middle and not 5th highest. Omaha has taxes that are higher than Lincoln. Also, many cities like Denver and KC that may have lower property taxes also have a city income tax as high as 10% of your wages. If you want lower property taxes but don't mind paying a city income or occupation tax which some cities call it, move there and quit complaining. "

Scott wrote on April 19, 2007 1:50 pm:
" You may have heard that there are several school renovation programs in the works. The students displace by this are bussed to new locations. In any case, making blanket condemnations on what you see out of your living or car door window is a perhaps not the best way to evaluate the situation. It does allow for generalization, though. "

" I'm a California transplant, and I would like to say that I have never in my life experienced people as genuinely nice as the ones in Nebraska. I feel very fortunate to live here. As for the Lincoln Public Schools issue, I'm not informed enough to agree or disagree with the letter written. If there are allegations of financial mismanagement, I would hope that LPS would submit to an outside audit. In response to Brian, however, I would like to say that the education my child is getting is far superior to the one she received in California. In terms of her schooling, we are receiving neither a Pinto nor a Chevy but rather a shiny new Mercedes. I consider that to be tax dollars well spent. "

" LPS can cut things that will not have a huge impact on the children. Those choose not to. I don't have a problem with buying pencils/pens ect. as long as everybody has to do it. Even "low income" families have to also. I do get tired of being asked to pay for "someone who cannot pay" due to income. My parents were low income also, but they were able to get us through school. We might not have had the newest or latest clothes, but we did have clothes. Part of the problem is giving everyone a hand out instead of making them responsible for their selves. Maybe instead of handout, make people work!!! Yes, this means low income, housing, "I can't work" people. Then our taxes would be lessened "

This is completly different than the snow removal from a persons personal driveway. Maybe the city should clear the drive ways of all people in lincoln who have somewhere to go in the morning, sigm me up, currently I have to pay $50 a month. "

" I wouldn't want to be public servant these days, between the public screaming at you for not doing your job fast enough and cheap enough and without benefits and your boss potentially firing you for going the extra mile to help a taxpayer. Here's a big thank you to all of the tax-supported employees that do work hard and truly care for the public. The Grinches that say you are wasting time and money by helping people out need to stop attempting to micromanage government. "
