Two people were badly injured after an accident Thursday afternoon at 40th Street and Yankee Hill Road.

Lincoln Police Capt. Genelle Moore said witnesses told police that at 1:16 p.m. a delivery truck eastbound on Yankee Hill Road ran a stop sign at the intersection and hit the driver’s side of a Chevy pickup northbound on 40th Street.

The man driving the pickup was momentarily trapped, Moore said. Both he and a female front seat passenger were taken to BryanLGH Medical Center West. As of Thursday evening the man was in the intensive care unit and doctors were still working on the female, Moore said.

An infant that was riding in a car seat in the pickup was fine, Moore said. The delivery truck driver was treated and released. Names of those involved in the accident were not yet available, Moore said.

" Just last month we were almost hit by a speeding westbound car. We were northbound, and ended up in the southbound lanes of traffic....fortunately nobody was there. This intersection is too big for eb/wb stopsigns. How about a traffic light? "

" I agree we need a triffic light badly!!! I've also had run ins with traffic that was headed west and eastbound. "

" As much as I'll hate it (live at 37th and Yankee Hill) a traffic light likely will need to go once super target gets built. Although, in this case, it was simple carelessness of the delivery truck driver (stop sign speed bumps might help as a interim solution). Of course, knowing the city's traffic department they'll end up saturating the area with traffic lights completly destroying the flow of traffic (see: walmart shopping center on 84th and Highway 2). "

" This intersection needs to have a traffic light installed. There is soon to be a Target Store opening there. There is going to be much more traffic at that intersection when it opens. I travel 40th street to Yankee Hill Road several times daily and have seen some very close calls there several times. People don't realize that this road gets traveled on alot now since all the new housing developments have opened up. The city traffic dept needs to be notified about this intersection needing a traffic light before the Target store opens in July. "

" I've ridden through that area on my motorcycle. I agree, the intersection is too large and starting to get used enough that stop signs just won't cut it. Look at the history of accidents there. The City needs to do something before someone dies. "

" Unfortunately this is not a city problem yet, the city/county line is about 300 yards north of this intersection. Remembering the trouble the city/county had with getting the paving project for Yankee Hill to the east of this intersection, I predict it will be awhile until a light system is put in. Another example of waiting until someone has to die before preventitive measures are taken. I live near 40th and San Mateo (just north of this intersection) and I have called police to set up a speed trap becaue traffice coming north is easily doing 50-70 mph in this area. But again, this intersection in question is still in county land. "

" not city - traffic could be going 50-70, but the posted speed limit from Yankee Hill to Saltillo is 55, so cars travelling 50-60 is to be expected. You don't see a 45 mph sign until you're past the 40th and Yankee Hill intersection. With the addition of the Target, and the new church, and developments planned south of the intersection, the speed limit is going to have to be lowered much earlier than 40th and Yankee Hill when travelling into town. "

" the accident looked horrific but i dont see as to why the police were at the intersection and had it blocked off from every direction until midnight. i stopped by there at around 11:30 p.m. and the police were looking for something in the grass on all sides of the road. this made me really curious. they finally packed up the "road closed" signs and left a little later. "

" People, please stop with the traffic light talk. You all know damn well that the city won't do anything until somebody gets killed. Until then we all better excercise extreme caution at that intersection. "

" COMING NORTH -not heading south towards the church. If you are turning north onto 40th from San Mateo, you barely have time to make it into your lane because of the speeders - I don't believe the speed limit is 55 NORTH of the intersection. "

" Hey "not city", that intersection is in the city. Guess the first clue was that the Lincoln Police and Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and worked the accident. This intersection (and as far south as the new church on 40th) has been in the city for over a year now, and yet no stop light. I guess the real problem isn't who owns the land, it's why aren't they noticing the high incidents of high speed accidents there. Too many people busy looking at all the new construction and not paying attention to their driving. It will only get worse when they soon close off 27th from yankee hill to the area of BW3 1/2 mile north to widen it. Hope they have the sense to get lights put in before the traffic at least doubles. "

" Hey, "not the city". Check some maps and think about why the Lincoln Police and Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded and worked the scene. This intersection has been in the city for over a year. It extends south down 40th to just past the new church. Anyway, the real issue is why the city hasn't realized the high incidents of serious, high speed accidents occuring here. With 27th soon closing from yankee hill to 1/2 mile north for widening, the traffic will only double here. I hope they get a light installed prior to this and Super Target opening. Too many people gawking at the construction work going on and not paying attention to their driving. "

" souths like a whole bunch of rich old south Lincoln residents doing what they do best, complaining "

C wrote on April 20, 2007 11:46 am:
" The reason that the intersection was closed for so long is that the police were waiting for someone to live or die. The people in the accident suffered serious injuries and if anyone dies it could result in additional charges which requires the police to investigate the scene as though someone has died. This is not an uncommon practice in serious/fatality accidents. "
