Two Scribner sisters, ages 7 and 11, were killed and their mother and four other girls were injured Saturday morning in a one-vehicle accident near North Bend, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Sunday night.

The sheriff’s office identified the victims’ mother as Ruth A. Ready, 43, of Scribner. Names of the children who were killed and injured were not available Sunday night.

According to the sheriff’s office, the accident occurred about 8:19 a.m. Saturday on Nebraska Highway 79 at County Road L, 7½ miles north of North Bend.

Investigators said Ready was driving a  1998 Chevrolet Suburban southbound on Highway 79 when the vehicle veered off the right side of the pavement and onto the grass shoulder. When Ready attempted to reenter the traffic lane, she lost control of the Suburban, which rolled and came to rest in the west ditch.

Ready, who was wearing a seat belt, according to the sheriff’s office, was taken to the Fremont hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office said five of the six juvenile girls — none of whom was wearing a seat belt — were thrown from the vehicle. The 7- and 11-year-old sisters were pronounced dead at the scene.

An 8-year-old girl was taken by LifeNet to Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition.

Three other girls, two of whom were thrown from the vehicle, were taken to Fremont Area Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Their ages were not available. It also was not known if the injured girls were family members.

None of the girls’ names were being released Sunday.

Dodge County officials declined to comment further.
